Manatsu No Eve (English translation: "Midsummer Eve") stars two new girls to the Tenchi lineup: Mayuka, a sixteen-year old girl who mysteriously shows up on the steps of the Masaki Shrine claiming to be Tenchi's daughter; and Yuzuha, a Juraian from Yousho's youth (we see many childhood flashbacks here, reminiscent of Negishi).

The film was released as part of a double feature along with Kadokawa's Latest SLAYERS movie.

MNE isn't considered a main continuation of the OAV canon, because of too many small glitches. The largest glitch, Kiyone, can be explained via a strange twist of Mihoshi's Space Adventure (set in the OAV, between OAV 1 and 2). Smaller glitches include different terminology ("Light Hawk Sword" vs. "Tenchiken"; and Light Hawk Wings are never mentioned). Many Tenchi theorists believe MNE to be part of the main OAV canon. There is also a very vocal minority that consider MNE part of the Negishi storyline. For right now, it is just left outside both canons.

MNE contrasts Japan's Midsummer Festival with Jurai's Startica. There are countless local festivals in Japan because almost every shrine (including the Masaki Shrine) has its own. Most festivals are held on an annual basis and celebrate events like the coming of the farming season, the harvest, or they commemorate historical events. A festival may be held over several days.

"Startica" may be some relation to Japan's Star Festival (Tanabata), which takes place on July 7. On this day two stars (Altair and Vega) that are usually separated from each other by the Milky Way, come together.

In the night of July 7, Japanese put little bamboo trees in their garden. They also hang papers with wishes written on it on that tree in the hope they become true.
