Pretty Sami was first seen in the original Tenchi OAV, as part of the "Mihoshi Special". Later she was seen in the TV series, specifically Time and Space Adventures, and went on to become an OAV and a series for Japanese television.

"Pretty Sami" used the cast of Tenchi (voiced by the original Japanese and US actors) with varied relationships, as did every spin-off of the original Tenchi OAV. In PS, Sasami and Tenchi are brother and sister (Aeka has another family, apparently), and mother Misaki Jurai is owner/manager of a small music shop (which employs the Miho/Kiyo duo). All the cast members (with the exception of Sasami) are regular, non-supernatural Earthlings. The Tenchi-Ryoko-Aeka love triangle still exists, but to a much smaller extent.

The storyline is an obvious parody of "Sailor Moon", and of all the "magical girl" anime that followed in its wake. Sasami is selected by Tsunami to be her Champion. There is a power struggle in Jurai as to who will be the next leader, as another Juraian selects a girl called Michelle (Misa) to be her Champion. In the great tradition of magical girls, Sasami is given a cute magical pet. In this case it’s a talking cabbit called Ryo Ohki – yes that’s right, Ryo Ohki *talks* in this story! Later in the PS series, Ryo-Ohki was revealed to be a male (she is a female in the Tenchi OAV), who can take on a humanesque form, who is Sasami's soul mate.

Pretty Sami also has a number of spinoffs. The first were the Tenchi music videos from Pioneer which featured Sami battling "evil Kiyone" to win back Tenchi. There are more than ten sub-storylines, each differing from the other, most in terms of the relationship between Sami and Tenchi.
