I remember when ATV first came out for the Playstation 2. I just fell in love with the series at that point. I found ATV 2 to be even better which is a rare thing these days. I never played the third because by that time the PSP game was announced and I want it badly. Now that it's here I'm a little disappointed but in the end it's all fairly good.

It's a racing game so there isn't a story at all. Just pretend you're a rookie ATVer, or whatever they call it.

The graphics are very nice. Lot's of details and I loved the detailed ground in the trailer park level, it looked really nice. A few graphical bumps come along with you like character models showing a small amount of jaggies and what not, but it's all good. However, while I was playing the trailer park level (I honestly have no clue why it's called that, I never saw one trailer) the game's graphics glitched up and giant jaggies filled the sky and tore up the land. Besides that one time it was all good.

The sound in the game is great. The ATVs, while all sounding the same, all sound good. Grunts from being thrown also sound good. There isn't any voice acting but that doesn't matter. Now, the music is very nice. It reminds me of Tony Hawk with its massive track list and a wide Varity of music from rap to country to rock. Bands like Less Than Jake and Slipknot offer their songs for this game. I constantly found myself tapping my foot along as I played the game, and I won't admit to any singing while playing...

The control in the game is the biggest flaw. I found the d-pad to be the easiest thing to use but the analog nub works also, you just have to get use to it. Doing tricks is easy, as soon as you learn how by going through the training. The problem comes in when you are trying to launch your jumps. I had and still have problems tilting the analog nub back and then forward to give me extra air and it's really needed in the pro circuits.

The game play is just what I expected. You get a training mode which isn't all that easy when it has to climbing buildings to grab medals. The training is useful though. There is the normal single player where you can just race around the tracks; you also get the tournaments and the game ahs you pick from indoor or outdoor. You must place well to advance and you get points and cards as you play. The points are used to buy new atvs, music videos, tracks and other stuff. The cards are collected to unlock new stuff to buy. You get cards for placing first place. You can also trade cards or buy them if you have enough blank cards which you get in the game as well.

Let’s focus on each area of play. Training explains itself. It teaches you how to power slide, How to use your surroundings to get to the medals or whatever they are. It's very useful but by completing it raises your % complete total. Which, as of this review is just at 10% and a number of hours (over 5) of play time.

Now, you have to pick single player or multiplayer at this point. Single player lets you do plain ole races but the tournament is where it's all at. There are different types of tournaments. You can do those outdoor races, which I love. You can do the indoor ones which I find harder because there is even less room for error. You can do an endurance race which explains itself and I don't have the attention span for more then 1 of those in a week. You can also do freestyle things which have you getting X amount of points, getting the medals in a specific amount of time ect... There is a lot to do and once you finish those you unlock a few other things. There are a ton of tracks and they are large, sometimes I go through 2 songs to finish a race.

I never had a chance to play the multiplayer but going by what everyone else has said, its fun and enough people play it but the problem is the same as it is with the normal game. The load times are terrible. You can wait for over a minute for the game to load. But it's oh so worth it because the game is a blast to play. I actually don't think I've played a racing game on a console, let alone portable system, that offered this much to do besides Gran Turismo but that game is just huge anyway (here’s hopes that the PSP version is great as the rest).

ATV is a very fun game, has a few flaws but it offers so much to do that it will keep you busy for a long time. There is also downloadable ghost races and music from the official site. It's get a lot of bang for your buck in this title but the load times do bring the game down a bit. If you love the PS2 version, run out and get this game, otherwise you may want to rent it and see if the load times are unbearable for you. I didn't find them THAT bad.
