Gothika got a lot of attention because in it's original press release it was stated that Halle Berry would do a full frontal nude scene in the film. Before all you guys run out the doors to see Gothika, the scene is not in the movie. I actually read reviews before seeing the movie and they weren't good, I was mildly surprised with Gothika but not by much.
Miranda Grey is a psychiatrist who finds herself one day in a cell inside the very asylum she worked for. She's being charged with murder but she says she didn't do it. Did she? The movie poses a good question but it flops around so much and the revolutions are flat out lame.
Halle Berry stars as Miranda and gives a half hearted performance. She pretty much screams through most of the movie and the biggest problem I have is that the movie teases you with her being naked but never shows her naked, yet it shows some very old and fat women naked. For the record though, you see the side of Halle's butt... Robert Downey Jr. is also in the movie and I don't understand why. Perhaps it's because of his legal problems and he just comes off as a suspect from that. His acting is bad and it's always been that way. Rest of the acting is so-so, nothing great.
Mathieu Kassovitz directed Gothika and for his first US movie it's a nice effect. A few things are done very well but in the end the script falters and ruins what the director was doing. I really did enjoy how this movie was directed. The writing is a mixed bag. The dialog is good, until the end and all of the medical lingo is thrown at you and some of it isn't explained because Miranda is a psychiatrist and already knows it, as she says in the movie. The biggest problem is the plot itself. Now, at it's core it's an interesting idea but during the middle it all falls apart and becomes predictable trash. The identity of the killer is painfully obvious that a blind man would be the only one to not figure it out.
I didn't have high hopes going in and I didn't really leave all that pleased. It's an interesting story in the begining but it really isn't worth seeing. My score isn't lower because there are many fine points of the movie but the bad stuff is too glaring for me to reccomend.
