A Drip Still
1. Cold water is placed into the dip of inverted lid 2. fire is kept low 3. Continually check temperature of the water in domed lid, if it begins to warm, then ladle it out and replace with cold. 4. Bowl is kept below center of domed lid, inside of pot. The vapors containing plant extracts rise up, hit the cool lid, and run off the center dripping into the bowl. 5.Plant matter is placed into water outside of bowl.
A working drip still can be made using ordinary household appliances. You will need a deep pot with a dome shaped lid, a few ordinary cereal bowls, and a device, or rack, to hold your distillate bowl away from the bottom of the pot. Never use iron, aluminum or especially galvanized ware for this purpose. Doing so will result in a poisonous product ! For best results use stainless steel, or a flameproof crockery. This method works well in making many medicines. But it also makes wonderful wildwood teas, preventing the loss of flavor and medicinal value that occurs when teas are made with infusions in boiling water. Adding ice to the water inside of the domed lid will help keep it cool. Check your distillate bowl frequently, it will fill up faster than you think !
Please note !! If you choose to use this method for brewing teas, be aware that your brew will be MUCH STRONGER ! This should particularly be noted with any herbs that are brewed in doseage, for remedial effects, or herbs that have dangerous side effects outside of a regulated doseage. Please ! Get to know the herbs you are working with before you ever ingest them. In this case, even if you think a know an herb well, do a research on it before you chance ingesting a distilled brew. This is a warning, not doing so could result in a serious chemical reaction that could kill you !! Or make you so sick you would wish it had.
