Sudbury Ont –
The Waterloo WildCats exploded for 2 goals in the
opening minute of the third period to power past the
Sudbury Spam 2-0 last night in CHL action.
In what was shaping up to be a goaltending battle,
Waterloo finally beat Johan Hedberg when Alexi Yashin
stole the puck from Brett Clark at the start of the
third period. Yashin sent a quick pass over to Jere
Lehtinen who deposited the puck in the net for his
first goal of the year.
Waterloo kept the attack going when Mangus Arvedson,
and Juha Ylonen would break in on a two-on-two.
Arvedson would drop the puck back to Mark Messier who
jumped into the play from the bench and the veteran
would score his second goal in as many games.
Waterloo would continue there defensive play for the
rest of the game, holding the spam to just 7 shots in
the third period after only 3 in the second. The
biggest save of the game came when Cats net-minder
Jose Theodore slid across ice to rob Mike Peca of a
sure goal in the first.
“Tonight the D played great,” said coGM Paul Connors
after the game, “we looked a little shaky in the
first, but Jose held them down and they really
responded in the second and third periods.”
The win improves the Cats to 4-5-0 so far this season,
and they vaulted there way into the play-off picture
securing eight spot in the Atlantic conference.
Tonight they travel to Redondo Beach to take on the
Mohicans.
