The convict is the perfect beginner cichlid. They will do well in any and all water conditions. The convict is by far the most prolific breeder and once they pair up they will breed like clockwork every 3-4 weeks. They are also easy to sex, as the females will have reddish-orange tint to their bellies when ready to breed. Convicts will also breed as small as 1.5". However, convicts become very territorial when guarding a nest and will not hesitate to take on much larger cichlids. Convicts are substrate breeders.
