"Listen here, angel." she said, and gave him a reassuring smile. "Yeah?" he turned in his seat to face her. "I will cover your ass to keep you out of trouble with your daddy, but you have to tell me EXACTLY what happened. THE TRUTH. Okay?" "Day..I'm a naive idiot, okay? I was hangin' out with Tony, we were drinkin a few beers..soon it was late and Tony's girlfriend was ready to be," he cleared his throat, "alone." She smiled knowingly and gestured for him to continue. "They left me alone with her 'friend', which might have been okay, but she expected to be, well she wanted to," he couldn't make himself finish the sentence. "She wanted to be ALONE with you?" Dayna finished for him and he nodded, his face flushing. "And you didn't?" she urged gently. "Naw, Day. She's nice and all but.." he shrugged. "Okay. Then what?" she asked. "Well she got all huffy and mad, jumped in her car, called me a stuck up asshole and peeled out of Tony's driveway." he grinned. "Oh the nerve.." Dayna teased, "Callin' you stuck up.." "Aw Day." he whined. "Okay angel, sorry. Why is your car still at Tony's then?" "I didn't think I should drive." he said, "But I didn't wanna hang around and LISTEN." he blushed again. "So I walked." "And you were sitting at the gate lookin' all pitiful beacuse.." she urged. "Because I knew my parents would kick my ass all the way to Dallas for drinkin' Day." he grinned. |
She laughed and patted his knee. Taylor sucked his breath in when she touched him. How would he ever be able to tell her that he couldn't bring himself to date any body, beacuse none of the girls he met compared to her? "Okay then. Anything else you need to tell me?" she said, looking pointedly at him. "Nope, not a thing." he smiled, relieved that she was not angry or disappointed anymore. "I'm glad you decided not to drive, angel." she said softly. "Let's go get your car." They rode in a comfortable silence over to Tony's. |
They left Dayna's car at the coffee house, instead of Tony's. Then Taylor drove Dayna back to his house. "Just remember to go along with whatever I say, angel. It'll be okay." she said and squeezed his hand. "But don't EVER let this happen again. I don't like misleading your parents. They make me wish I had parents like that when I was younger." "You got it , Day. I can't handle this type of pressure." he said. Taylor opened the door and let Dayna in ahead of him. "Oh thank goodness! Dayna I thought you weren't gonna make it today." Diana said. "Tay! Where did you come from? I thought you were still asleep." she asked, looking from one to the other. "Prince Charming here came to my rescue again.." Dayna said brightly. "I almost didn't make it this morning. My knight in shining armour just happened to find me on his way home from the coffee house. Car trouble." Taylor smiled gratefully at Day, then grinned at his mother. "Taylor. You really should let your father or I know when you are leaving, honey. We need to know where you are." she said. "Sorry, mom." he said. "Won't happen again. But aren't you glad I did?" he embellished, reminding his mother that she depended way too much on Dayna's help. "Yes. I suppose. Go gather up the laundry from your room for her, would you.?" "Sure mom." he said and headed off in that direction. "Alright then miss. Why are you covering for him?" Diana asked, both hands on her hips. "He didn't do anything bad, Ms. Hanson. Had a few beers and wound up with no ride home so he walked. I picked him up, gave him some coffee and told him not to worry. He was all set to bite the bullet. He was in a state too, worried about disappointing you, I guess. I was just trying to let him keep his dignity. Trust me, he won't do it again." Dayna told her. "Besides, it'll eat him up and he'll be tellin' ya all about it within the course of a week." she grinned. "Maybe so, but I don't think it was me he was worried about disappointing." Diana said, chuckling. Dayna shrugged. "Maybe his daddy then.." she offered. "Maybe. Taylor will take you back to wherever you left your car when you're done. It's the least he can do." she grinned back. Dayna chuckled and got to work. |
"Day, that was cool of you. You didn't have to.." Taylor told her as he drove her back to her car. "Didn't do any good sunshine. She's on to you. Better 'fess up soon." she giggled. "Oh shit, Day.." he groaned. "Why didn't she say anything then?" he asked. "I guess she wanted to make sure it wasn't ME who kept you out all night." she answered teasingly. "I dunno, angel. Fess up and ask her." she grinned. "I guess I better." he sighed. He wondered if Day knew what he would give for her to be the one who did keep him out all night, as he looked over at her. She was smiling, looking out the window. Her smile made everything brighter and after all this time he KNEW that this was way more than a crush. He was totally head over heels in love with her, and had no idea how to let her know. That girl last night sealed it for him. He had tried to kiss her, but only saw Day in his head, behind his closed eyelids. He tried to keep his arm around her, but she didn't feel right, and her hands were not near as soft as Day's, which amazed him, since Day spent most of her day with her hands in hot soapy water. Nothing about that other girl felt right, but when he was with Day, nothing was ever wrong. |
