The examination of George Shearn at [ ] residing in the parish of Farington-Gurney in the County of Somerset laborer [ ] touching the [ ] of his last legal settlement taken upon oath this twenty-eighth of December 1830 before us the [ ] justices of the peace in the aforesaid county.
Who upon
his oath saith as follows,
“I am
nearly 62 years of age and was born in the parish of Farrington Gurney
aforesaid as have heard and believe where my father and mother, Joseph
and Hannah Shearren were settled inhabitants as have land by Rowling farm
there. I lived with my father at Farrington Gurney aforesaid until
I was about 18 or 19 years of age when I went to work at coal pit and lodged
about for several years where I broke my thigh and then I went out and
agreed with my brother-in-law Samuel Hunt of Hart street in Bristol [a]
shoemaker to learn his trade for three years and a half but there was no
writing between us. I lived in my brother in law’s house all the
time. When my agreement expired I stayed with my brother in law and
worked for him as a journeyman for about two years. Then went into
business for myself and rented a house on Radcliff hill in the parish of
St. Mary Radcliff in the said city of Bristol for about 8 years at the
yearly rent of 30 pounds which said her landlord’s name was Wildgoose (who
now lives in Phillips, Bristol). [I] then left Bristol and went to carry
on my business of a shoemaker at Chard Borough of the county of Somerset.
I took to {Adams} which was leased out at 21 pounds/ year and took it of
W. Silvester s father (resident?) of the time at 15 pounds/year and Rates
& Taxes. I lived in this house four years and a half and paid
the rent. I stayed in Chard Borough about two years afterwards and lodged
as a single man my wife being then dead. I then came back to Farrington
Gurney and have since lived different places but have done nothing since
my residence at Chard Borough to owe a settlement. I was married
at St. Michaels in Bristol about 27 years of age to Miriam, my late wife.
By whom I have had a son named John now in the East Indies, a soldier.
I am now out of work and are chargeable to the said parish of Farrington
Gurney.

of
