JOEY
POTTER
a.k.a
Katie
Holmes
"She's not the girl next door, she's the girl you only wished you could live near."
---David Letterman on Katie Holmes.
Katherine Noelle Holmes was born December 18, 1978 in Toledo, Ohio.  The youngest of five children, one brother and three sisters, Katie never had any intention of becoming an actress.  It was her mother that suggested she take some modeling classes, and one summer a talent scout suggested that she spend more time auditioning and less time modeling.  After only one audition she was cast as Tobey Maguire's girlfriend in The Ice Storm. After this young Katie was on her way.  Even though she was offered the role of Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, she declined it so that she would be able to finish high school back in Toledo.  While starring in a local production of Damn Yankees Katie learned that Kevin Williamson (Scream) was casting for his new teen drama.  Katie sent in her audition tape and waited for a reply.   Williamson immediately saw what he wanted and invited her to a call-back audition.  Katie, however, was still doing her play, and asked Williamson for a reschedueling, and he willingly agreed.  At her live audition it was obvious to everyone that they had found their new Joey Potter, the troubled girl-next-door.  Dawson's Creek was declared a success even before it started and is still keeping us tuned in today.
Since her start on the creek, Katie has also starred in
Disturbing Behaviour, Go, Teaching Mrs. Tingle (also directed by Kevin Williamson), The Wonder Boys (also with Tobey Maguire),  The Gift, and coming this year she stars in Abandon..
While she apparently dated co-star Joshua Jackson during the first season of D.C., she is currently dating actor Chris Klein, and hopes to continue her work in movies
.
I think Katie Holmes is a powerful actress that just needs a chance to spread her wings a little bit.  While I haven't seen all of her movies, I have seen about half of them.  Maybe because Kevin Williamson directed both Dawsons's and Teaching Mrs. Tingle, but her characters in the two are practically the same.  Watch the movie and you'll see what I'm talking about.  Actually a lot of her roles are like that.  Yet, I still liked the movie because her performance was still good, and Mrs. Tingle and her best friend also give scene-stealing performances.
Now in
Disturbing Behaviour she plays another troubled teen, but the role is actually different.  As you can see in the picture to the left, she plays a punk-rock type of chick who is trying to avoid being brainwashed into the perfect child.  While some points of this movie lean towards the typical teen horror movie, overall I think it's a good film.  So if you haven't seen it I'd recommend it.
The third one I've seen is
The Gift, which is by far the most different one I've seen.  Now she does go topless in a part of it so if that bothers you (as it does me), either don't watch the movie or close your eyes.  I can't actually tell you much about her character without ruining the end of the movie.  What I can tell you is that she's a rich little southern girl, with a much better accent than some one else we know in Varsity Blues.....   While the movie itself is not exactly outstanding, I thought it was pretty good, and worth a look-see.
