BREAKING NEWS -- 

This evening there was a drug related shooting that occurred. The incident took place at BJ's at 75th Street. A suspect went to his car while the victim was sitting near the bench. A beer bottle was thrown in the direction of the two near the bench. The victim ducked to avoid the bottle, it was at this point that the suspect pulled the gun and fired one shot at the victim.

  

The suspect then fled the scene ensuing a manhunt throughout the area. 

As well, the parking lot at BJ's was cleared and roped off to be closely searched. As witnesses gave statements the car was found traveling south on Coastal Hwy. at a normal speed. Police gave chase for a short time until the vintage VW finally came to a stop at 28th street (Robin Drive).

  

The bullet went through, and the injury will be non-fatal. The suspect has a record of prior hand gun violations. It is also known he was in the possession of one pound of CDS. The police at this time (02:07, 05-30-2001) are still trying to find the missing drugs. Police cruisers were closely searching Coastal Hwy. between 75th and 28th since the drugs may have been discarded out the window.

UPDATE STARTS --

The gun used was a .357 cal Colt. The man was from Selbyville, Delaware and the victim was as well from Del. The man fled for five minutes southbound...when arrested his backpack contained more than half a dozen bags of marijuana. Witnesses soon confirmed that he was the shooter. The victim was flown to Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Suspect is being held in OC jail, held on NO bail. There will be a bail hearing on May 31st of 2001 in Snow Hill, MD. Please note that the Police are asking that no assumptions be made about the case.
