AN Analysis of Formal Letter Translation Problems of THIRD-YEAR ENGLISH MAJORS

Abstract

Translating first languages to second languages is one of the most difficult tasks for all translators, especially when the source text is very formal.  However, there are not many studies focusing on such formal tasks.  The purpose of this study was to investigate translation problems in a formal letter translated by third-year English major students.  The participants translated a formal letter from their first language (Thai) to second language (English).  The results indicated that the most important reason for translation problems arose from structural differences, whereas the second most important reason causing the problems were Thai language influence.  Additionally, lexical differences were important problem.  It is very likely that structure and lexicon may represent the most important issues for those who want to translate their first language into a second language.  At the same time, translating Thai to English using Thai structure or writing style is usually unacceptable in English.
