June 25, 2002 A slow day at work. There are beautiful flowers nearby that I never noticed before! The first flower is called an "ajisa." I don't know the name of the second flower. (Maybe you know?)

Today has been a good day. My classes were unbelievably productive, and FUN!! (The most important part.) One thing I did today: I showed the 8th graders a Quicktime video of Englandfs World Cup song. It is called gGo Englandh and is hilarious. It makes fun of all the players, including Beckham. If you don't know Beckham, check him out. He's more interesting than Michael Jordan. Watch out for his "mohawk" and his Spice Girl wife! |

It's way past my bedtime, but I wanted to add a pic or two. By the way, does anyone know about a virus that eats the word "picture" out of a website? Maybe it's just a side effect of using Japanese Windows?? These are s from my wonderful new digital camera!! The scene on the right is across the street from my apartment balcony. |

Today is hot again, and will be for the rest of the summer. Yea. I went shopping with Megumi today. She was buying a Father's Day present for her dad, (Yours is in the mail, Dad...:) and I wasn't planning on buying anything, but I ended up buying 2 books and something for my students. I learn new things almost everyday. Today, I made another discovery. Apple-flavored cola by Fanta. I think I'm starting to be a fan of Fanta...they also have Melon Soda. It's bright green and quite fun to drink...just ask my sister. (It's her favorite drink, now!) Is anyone having problems reading my website? Nathan mentioned that whatever html I'm using for the text is not coping with his Mac very well. What do you think? E-mail me. :) wbaldwin76@yahoo.com Later I'm meeting Hiroshi. I hope to have a picnic on the beach and start reading one of the books I just bought. I'm finishing a book of short stories by Roald Dahl right now. They are very interesting, but I think he's a much more gifted children's book writer. (Yes, I'm reading!) ...I'm also joining the tennis club or music club after school sometimes at the junior high. It's fun, and I can get exercise, play my flute, learn new music, try new instruments, and have fun with my students as well. I promise I will have new digital pics up, soon! TTYL. ^_^

Yakiniku |
|
This is called yakiniku. It means grilled meat. This picture was taken at a yakiniku restaurant this week after our monthly Etajima International Club meeting. You get a plate of raw meat and cook it on a little grill in front of you on the table. (This picture is thanks to Nathan.) Does it look good?

Hi, hi. Today is a sweaty 30 degrees (celcius), which to everyone like me (who can't really comprehend the 5/9ths conversion factor, plus or minus 32), it is about 85 degrees. And, no air conditioning at school. I am constantly reminded in certain situations how lucky I was to have certain things in America that simply aren't available or used in Japan. For example, there is no air conditioning in the classrooms (There is air conditioning in one room for all of the teachers in the school.), no central heating (anywhere, except big department stores...I have an up-to-date kerosene heater with an automatic shut-off), no pants that fit me (I'm too tall and curvy...ha ha), and no chedder or Colby Jack cheese. (Okay, cheese isn't really in the same category, but it's equally important!) Last night was my English conversation class. I teach it twice a month for people my age and up that want to practice and learn English. Many of them are housewives, and on the whole they are very giving, wonderful people. To let you know what class is like, I lead the class in discussions about their lives using different grammar points, like: "What did you do last weekend?" Anyhow, last night we sang "I just called to say 'I love you'", played Bingo, and talked about the "most famous" people in Japan, or the "most beautiful" place they've visited. I hope I'm doing a good job. :)
