AP Chemistry Summer Assignment for the summer of 2007 The purpose of this assignment is for you to become familiar with the basics of atomic structure, the principles of matter, and basic math. These are the foundations of chemistry and need to be mastered before we can move on to other material. You are expected to know by heart all of the symbols and charges that appear on the tables. Polyatomic ions as well as monatomic ions are necessary. All homework assignments should be neatly handwritten showing all work necessary to solve the problem. If the work is not shown then no credit is given. (It is important that you take pride in your work. Please refrain from turning in assignments with excessive cross outs or white outs.) Remember to include units. ****Although it is not discouraged that you collaborate on the summer assignment, it is imperative that you are doing the work and not copying from someone else. Correct answers indicate to me that you know what you are doing. Turning in correct answers without knowing how to answer the questions on your own is only going to cause problems later on. 1. Fill in the charts of elements and ions and memorize them. Common names of elements are not necessary. You should learn the most common oxidation state for at least Iron, copper, lead, and tin. These charts are for your benefit and will not be collected. 2. Read chapter 1 and do problems starting on page 31: 10, 18, 20, 28, 34, 38, 40, 42, 70 from chapter 1. These will be collected. 3.
