Dear Parents/Guardians:

Parents and guardians are the primary educators of their children.  As children mature and develop relationships with family members and others, they learn about appropriate behaviours and values, as well as about sexuality.  They are influenced by parents, family, friends, community, as well as various forms of media.  School-based programs add another important dimension to a child’s ongoing learning about sexuality.

The York Region District School Board believes that communication between school and parents is vital to the success of our Growth and Development program.  Below, we have outlined the topics covered in Grade 6 for your information.

? the changes to the reproductive organs and their functions with puberty
? using a problem-solving/decision-making process to address issues related to friends, peers, and family relationships

The growth and development program will be taught during the months of March and May.

If you do not wish your child to participate in any part of the program or if you wish your child to withdraw from discussions regarding sensitive issues when they rise, please contact the school.  We will provide an alternate program in place of the topic/resource to which you object.

The school council may advise the school regarding the acceptability of any section of the program, according to the YRBE Policy 262.0, School Councils, and Procedure P262.0, School Councils.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. L. Zaretsky,
Principal.
