Grade 6 History Project:
The Native Peoples Before European Contact

In groups of six or seven, students will research one of the following native cultures.

1) North Pacific Coast
2) Plains
3) Inuit
4) Sub Arctic
5) Eastern Woodlands

Using a variety of printed and electronic sources (www.linktolearnig.com), students will prepare:

1) An oral presentation using a variety of techniques to maintain audience interest

All group members will work together and share resources, but each member will be responsible for their own presentation. Each group member must choose one of the following sets of topics:

1) Clothing and body decorations, art, crafts
2) Dwellings, villages/groupings, roles of men/women/children/old people
3) Travel, trade, warfare
4) Hunting, fishing, agriculture, food
5) Religion, rituals, special occasions, shamans
6) Leadership, government, rules, social ranks, clans, families

Not all of the above topics will apply to all native cultures. For instance, the Inuit had no agriculture. Students should work on the topics they are given which do apply to their native people.

Evaluation will be on:

1) Presentation – accuracy, effort, ability to hold audience interest (use of visual materials and other methods; as little reading of notes as possible)
2) Research – good use of class time, research abilities, cooperation with group members
