WCA Press Release on Payne

14th November 2002

WCA Welcomes Payne’s house move
• Political solution must be addressed •

Working Class Action, a local group which has been highlighting the presence of the convicted paedophile Ivan Payne in the North Inner City, today welcomed a police statement that Payne had left the area.

WCA spokesperson Eoin Candon said:
"This is a very positive response for residents and shows the real community spirit of the area - people here will not allow their children to be endangered or the area treated as a ‘dumping ground’. The protests and publicity campaign against this man were carried out in a dignified and peaceful manner - despite media scares about ‘vigilantes’. We know he will sneak into another area, and residents there will have to face the same problem, but they should protest too."

Working Class Action wishes to re-emphasise our original statement that a national policy must be put in place which ensures that communities are consulted, or at least informed about, the presence of released paedophiles in the area.

This is a ultimately a political issue impacting directly on all individual communities and the government has a responsibility to address it and come up with a solution.

However in relation to the controversy about Fr Payne being resident in the North Inner City – the Taoiseach’s constituency – to our knowledge NOT ONE representative of the government has spoken out on the issue.
