Working Class Action
WCA Press Release on Payne
18th November 2002
Minister must answer for Payne’s presence
Working Class Action, the group which highlighted the fact that convicted paedophile Ivan Payne was living in Clarion Quay, today congratulated the Evening Herald on it’s consistent highlighting of the case.
Spokeperson Eoin Candon said:
"Most of the media has chosen to ignore the anger and fear of communities in the North Inner City regarding the dumping of Fr Payne in our area. However the Herald has continued to give coverage the case and a voice to the ignored parents."
Working Class Action has again been approached by worried locals who have confirmed that he is living in a hostel on Gardiner Street.
Nr Candon continued:
"We are angry, but not surprised, that he has been shunted half a mile down the road, into the middle of another working class community. Who is making these decisions on where he should live?, Who is accountable and answerable to our communities? The silence of the government parties is deafening on this case."
Working Class Action wishes to re-emphasise our original statement that a national policy must be put in place which ensures that communities are consulted, or at least informed about, the presence of released paedophiles in the area.
This is a ultimately a political issue impacting directly on all individual communities and the government has a responsibility to address it and come up with a solution.
Working Class Action calls on all local people to contact the Minister for Justice directly to demand answers in the Payne case.
The Minister’s contact details are:
