A regional name must conform to period place naming practices. Most place names mentiones some sort of geographical feature (a hill, a boundary, a town, a swamp) and modified it with an adjective to help distinguish it from all the other like geographical features: A cliff (which is white), a wood (with deer living in it), a farm (belonging to Beorn). They were not poetic or metaphorical, they were for everyday use and meant just what they said.
