Characteristic Properties Vs General Properties

Characteristic Properties: Good for Identification,

Colors, shapes, textures,

General Properties: mass, volume,

This chapter is about identifying the properties of matter and learning how scientists classify matter to help us understand it.

Assign Reading pp.14-21

Go over "Guide for Reading" and

Answer these questions to yourself as you read

Go over "Reading Strategies" p. 14K

As students read have them make a list of properties of matter

Objectives: The student will be able to…

Presentation: Properties of Matter

(With defintitions, I do not want the words out of the book but for you to be able to explain them.)

Characteristic Properties: Characteristic properties are properties that never change. Like the hardness of a diamond, or the density of gold. Because they never change we can use these to identify a substance.

Boiling Point: is a characteistic property. It is the point at which a substance turns form a luquid to a gas. Every liquid has a special temperature that it boils at so we can use that temperature to identify it.

Melting Point: is a characteristic property to help you identify solids. It is the point that a solid turns into a liquid. Every solid has a special temperature that it melts at.

Physical Changes: Melting Point and Boiling point are considered physical changes. The substance is still the same thing and can be changed back to it's original form.

Chemical Changes: but sometimes changes in substance create a new substance like burning a piece of paper. We can't take the ashes and turn it back into paper it has become smoke and heat and ash. We have created a new substance. C+N=CN H + O = H20 Na + Cl = Salt
