Bridge Building

We would like to thank the Ohio County Community Foundation for their generous support.  Because of the Thank-A-Teacher grant program we have able to get materials and tools that make the Bridge-building project and this web site possible.

Welcome to the OCEMS 8th grade science bridge project.  The project will give students experience at engineering as they design, test and construct balsa wood bridges
  • This project is part of our motion forces and energy unit.  Students will learn about the forces that act on bridges and methods for designing them light but strong.  They will also get experience at computer aided design and using computer network and Internet resources.
  • Bridge Resources
    • Bridge Design Software
    • Pre-Engineering Software (Bridge Builder)
      • This is the software that we use.  It's a good introduction to bridge building, but a little expensive.  Plans can be printed from this program and it supports VRML 3-D generation.  The site also has a lightest bridge hall of fame and safety guidelines.
    • Cosmo 3-D Player
      • http://www.cai.com/cosmo
      • If you want to make your Bridge Builder bridge 3-D and look at it, Cosmo has a 3-D generating plug-in at this site.  We use this site to see how to connect the trusses and deck of the bridge.
    • PBS
      • http://www.pbs.org/buildingbig
      • This site has activities related to the Building Big TV series.  We viewed the Bridge building episode in class and there are some activities here related to it. The site also has dozens of bridge pictures and bridge related links.
    • West Point Bridge Design
      • http://bridgecontest.usma.edu/index.htm
      • This site has a free bridge designing program written for West Point Military Academy.  The site also sponsors a contest in bridge design. Great software for more advanced bridge designing and simulating.  If you enjoy designing bridges you'll love this.
