Robotics Projects
This page only gives you some ideas for projects with BEAM robots, but you
are not limited to this. Any type of robotics project would be good for an
independent project including, LEGO mindstorms and others. If you have other
ideas let me know and I will add them to the site.
Level 1 10 Points
Identify and draw the symbol for the following components.
- Motor _____
- Resistor _____
- Capacitor_____
- LED _____
- Transistor_____
- Switch _____
- Diode _____
- De solder and remove several of these items from a circuit board.
- Discuss the dangers of capacitors with high voltages.
- Research the basic electronic parts on the Internet. (From the club web
page)
Level 2 10 Points
- Construct simple circuits
- Series _____
- Parallel _____
- Explain the flow of electrons through your circuits.
- Research Solar Engines and the Internet. (From the club web
page)
Level 3 25 Points
- Using the directions provided with a kit construct a Solar Engine kit.
- Find plans on the Internet for other types of solar engines such as a
FLED, 3181, Miller, etc.
- Calculate the resistance of 5 resistors.
Level 4 15 Points
- Build a second solar engine of another type such as a FLED, 3181, Miller,
etc.
- Have built at least 2 different SE's.
- Find plans or design a Solar Roller.
Level 5 15 Points (10 points extra if you don't use a kit)
- Have built at least three different SE robots such as a Flagwaver, Symet,
Trimet, Solar roller, Flagella bot, boat bot, sub bot etc.
- Compete in a Solar roller competition
- Find plans (or design) a photo popper or Tracking head robot.
Level 6 15 Points (10 points extra if you don't use a kit)
- Build a two motor robot
- Have completed at least 4 bots.
- Research NV neurons and NV nets on the Internet. (From club web page)
- Find plans (or design) a tracking or Beacon robot on the Internet. (from
club web page)
Level 7 15 Points (10 extra points if you don't use a kit)
- Build a tracking robot, that uses a logic chip and sensors or
- Build a beacon that will attract robots to it or
- Build a tracking head that uses a logic chip or sensors.
- Research walkers.

Ideas (More lists and examples can be found on the Internet through the club
web site).
Squirmer: wiggles flips or moves it's body in some way
EX: magbots, flagwavers, heads
Slider: moves by sliding an appendage or body part across the ground
EX: Snake,Earthworm, flagella
Crawler: propels itself on tracks, or by a crawling motion. No parts
slide on the ground.
EX: Turbot, Inchworms, Tracked
Jumper: moves by jumping from place to place.
EX: Vibrobot, Springbot
Roller: Has some part or appendage that rolls along the ground.
EX: symet, solarollar, popper, miniball
Walker: Propelled by legs that are lifted off the ground as it moves.
EX: Walkers
Swimmer: Moves in or over water
EX: Boatbots Subbots
Climbers: Able to climb vertical surfaces
EX: windowclimbers
Fliers: Moves through the air.
EX: Beamplane, Beamblimp, capcitorplane
