Sleep

By Carrie Gascoigne

In a moment's restlessness
and a breath expelled
He opens his eyes
to a world borne of passion
love and honour
to his own world
where two souls journey together.
In a moment's restlessness
and a breath expelled
He opens his eyes
to a harsh reality.
All of what was now an illusion
his mind's recreation of his heart's desperate want.
Minutes later, gazing wistfully
into an unending night,
the tormented relaxes, if only but a little.
He is comforted by the thought
he will never be alone
if just one of those stars belongs to her.
