Hooke’s Law Assignment

1.      Identify the following terms: Hooke’s Law, elasticity, elastic, plastic, elastic limit, stress, strain, spring constant.

2.      A spring fixed at one end is 24 cm long (un-stretched) and has a constant 2500 N/m. If a block of mass 30 kg is suspended from the spring, how long will the spring be?

3.      A 20-cm long spring is attached to the wall. When pulled horizontally with a force of 100 N, the spring stretches to a length of 22 cm. What is the value of the spring constant?

4.      The same spring in #3 is now placed vertically on the ground and a 10.2 kg block is balanced on it. How high is the compressed spring?

5.       The same weight is hung from spring A and spring B. Spring A stretches more. Which spring has the larger force constant? Explain your answer.

6.       Different weights are hung from spring A and spring B but the springs stretch by the same amount. If the weight hung from spring A is smaller than the weight hung from spring B, which spring has the larger force constant? Explain.

7.       Two springs have the same total length when the same weight is hung from them. Does this mean the springs have the same force constant? Explain.

8.       The equilibrium length of a spring is 0.37 meters and its force constant is 4.2 N/m. What is the total length of the spring if a 1.3 N weight is hung from it?

9.      A spring stretches by 0.21 meters when a 5.6-newton weight is hung from it. By how much does the spring stretch when a 7.5-newton weight is hung from it?

10.  Describe what is happening to the spring in the diagram below at points A, B, C, & D. Give the specific names of these points.
