This past weekend two of my four
children were in a cross country ski race. Because there were too
many athletes to begin the race all at the same time, the race began with
a staggerred start. The first racer started and they waited 60 seconds
before they allowed the second racer to begin. After another 60 seconds
the third racer began, and so on. Here were the times that were called
out when they crossed the finish line:
Ben (1st racer) - 22 minutes
Tom (2nd racer) - 20 minutes
Sara (3rd racer) - 23 minutes
Emily (4th racer) - 23 minutes
Mike (5th racer) - 26 minutes
Joe (6th racer) - 30 minutes
Even though Sara and Emily finished
at the same time (23 minutes), Emily finished ahead of Sara because she
started after Sara.
Can you figure out the times for
the skiiers and tell me their place in the race?
For 4th and 5th graders: What is
the mean, median, and mode for their final race times?
