Weekly Challenge
November 10-14, 2003
Fall is here and leaves are everywhere. If I
paid you $5.00 an hour to rake leaves and you worked from 9:00 a.m. until
12:30 p.m., how much will you get paid?
Show your work.
For 4th and 5th graders: The days are getting shorter and shorter.
When I checked the U.S. Naval Observatory website, I found that the
sun set at 4:55 p.m. on November 7th, 4:54 p.m. on November 8th, and 4:53
p.m. on November 9th. If this pattern continues, what time will the
sun set on Thanksgiving? _______
Note: The sun will actually set at 4:38 p.m. on Thanksgiving because
the pattern changes a little bit. The time you figure out for Thanksgiving
turns out to be the earliest time the sun will set this fall and it occurs
on December 5th (the days continue to get shorter because sun rise will be
later)! Can you imagine that we have to turn on the lights so early?
