Scot, you are the Weakest Link...

Scot What's it like being a contestant on the biggest quiz show in the world? What's it like living in the fastest country on Earth? And what the hell is Tye Dye? We caught up with Scot, who was a contestant on The Weakest Link USA, and here's what he had to say...

How did you first hear about The Weakest Link?
I'm a big game show fan and have been most of my life. A friend of mine called me on a Thursday night and told me about try outs for a new game show on Friday at the Circus Circus Hotel. We arranged to meet at noon. We didn't even know what the show was we were trying out for.

Did you know who Anne Robinson was?
Before the try outs, NO. I didn't even looking up the English show versions web site until they called me back and said I was selected to play.

Can you tell us about your audition? Where it was? How long it lasted? What happened?
Like I said, The Try Outs were held at the Circus Circus, they were advertised Noon-6pm. My friend and I arrived at the hotel, found a parking space by the door and walked in. We just happened to have entered the door right in front of where the try outs were. The next test time was 2PM so we hung out and asked the girl questions about the show. She said it was a high pressured quiz show that's like Millionaire and a vote off show like Survivor. Being fans of both shows I was excited, my friend wasn't as happy. I passed the written test and was asked to stay and play a mock version of the game. My friend had to wait outside with all but 9 who passed.
I was number one in the mock game and answered all but one of my questions right. We played a few rounds and voted after each round. The players voted off were asked to leave the auditions. I thought that was so cool. About 2 hours after I arrived they said the famous words to the remaining 6, "DON'T CALL US, WE'LL CALL YOU" The remaining players left the room and found our friends sitting outside the door. A man who was dressed in black who was taking pictures in the try outs called out my name as I was walking away. He asked me for my phone number and I gave him my card. I didn't know why he wanted my number, but I gave it up, ended up he was a reporter covering the try outs for Weakest Link. He called me about hours later and said he was a reporter and had nothing to do with the show, but thought that I was great and wanted to tell me he thought I was going to get a call back. They said they would call back the last week in March, the date was March 16th.

What was it like when you found out you were going to be on the show? Did you think you were going to win $1,000,000
March ended, I didn't get a call, I figured they didn't want me. April 2nd came and the phone rang. It was Andrea from the try outs and she asked me if I wanted to try to win a million dollars. I thought about it for about 1/2 of 1 second and screamed yes. My friend that went to the try outs with me just happened to be here. We jumped up and down for about 10 minutes.

What time did you arrive at the studios?
Lot's of things happened before I arrived at the studio. The game began at 1pm on April 9th when I arrived in LA The show didn't start taping till about 6pm on April 10th.

Is there a dress code? Was there anything you were not allowed to wear?
We were sent specific wardrobe instructions with our flight information. I didn't own anything like I was being asked to wear so I went to the Big Mans Store and spent $350.00 on nice big guy clothes. (usually I wear only tye dye shirts from my company). The directions said to bring 3 outfits you would wear to a rich friends house party. I thought that meant I should wear a button up tye dye but my friend said no way.

How well did you get on with the other contestants?
The game began as soon as I landed in LA. I was met at the plane by a contestant coordinator and driven to two gray vans with dark tinted windows. I ended up being the person everyone was waiting for and as soon as I got in the van both of the vans left. There were 5 people in my van already when I got in and they were all talking to each other when I climbed in. I was behind in the conversation and holding up the group, two things I didn't want to happen.
My plan was to play the stupid Tye Dye maker from Vegas. The guy who doesn't know how he passed the test. I brought with me 50 tye dye t shirts with my company logo embroidered on them. My plan for the shirts were to give them away to everyone. Who could vote off the nice stupid tye dye maker from Vegas who gave them a cool T shirt was my plan.

What was it like when you first saw Anne Robinson?
I didn't see Anne until just minutes before the taping began. The studio warm up guy announced her, she appeared on stage, said "welcome team," glared at me and then said to everyone, "this is the last time you will see me smile" AND SHE WAS FROWNING WHEN SHE SAID IT.

Is Anne really as horrible as she appears on TV? Is she worse?
I had no interaction with Anne other than what you see on TV. During the commercial breaks she disappears in the black studio. I have to be honest, the more she yelled at me, the more I wanted her. I found myself attracted to Anne.

Did you have to do any retakes of questions?
No, once we stopped tape when she called our money pounds, but it was only her 4th show being taped in America.

Were there any questions you answered really stupidly?
I wouldn't say stupidly, I never wanted to say I DON'T KNOW. I had a handful of "GO TO" answers in the back of my mind if I was asked a question I didn't know. I used two of my go to answers, one was PIZZA, and the other one was my answer to WHO HAS BEEN THE CEO OF PLAYBOY SINCE 1988, Rosie O Donnell. I figured when it came time to vote someone off the team would vote off the I DON'T KNOW people first.

Was there any tactical voting going on? Did you always vote for the person you thought was the Weakest Link?
I voted in an alliance first round with the person thrown off first. After that I went after the weakest link until the last round I played. The round that I got voted off in was the round I decided it was time to take out the strongest link and that's when I voted for the doctor.

What was it like being voted off? What was the Walk of Shame like?
It was only a game, but it hurt me bad when I was voted off. You see, some of the team ate dinner and partied the night before around Hollywood. We got to know each other. I would have never voted off Andrea and would have taken her to the final round with me. When her vote was revealed and it was my name she said I could not believe it. When Anne asked Helen why Scot, she said she didn't like my shirt. What she didn't say is I HAVE 3 OF HIS SHIRTS IN MY SUIT CASE. The tye dye karma gods took care of the ladies for voting me off, they both went home with nothing too.

Tell us about the post-game interview (after the Walk of Shame).
I had a great time from the time I landed in LA until I was voted off. I was a little upset with myself because if I would have stayed with voting off the weakest link I would have voted Helen, Brad the strongest link voted Helen and said to me the next morning that he would have kept me. I was in the rant and rave booth for about 10 minutes. The producers kept asking me questions that could make someone answer in a way they may come off angry. Since I only had nice things to say about my experience they didn't keep me long.

What did you do after you were voted off?
As soon as your voted off and done in the rant room you are taken back to the hotel. I hit the bar the second I arrived. I watched the doors to see who was going to be dropped off next.

Would you recommend other people apply for the show? Was it as good as you expected?
I WOULD TOTALLY RECOMMEND EVERYONE TRY OUT. It was a wonderful time. Remember we did the show a week before it even premiered in America. We were the pioneers and the simpletons that everyone can learn from now and do better because of. We didn't have the luxury of watching any shows before we taped.

What do you think of The Weakest Link compared with Who Wants To Be A. Millionaire?
No comparison, I have watched Regis since he started a couple years ago. I watched all the prime time gameshows come and go last year. Millionaire is a happy, slow moving trivia show. Link is evil and fas paced. I think Link will be a huge hit for many years in America. The USA audience loves a train wreck and will watch each week to see who survives.

And finally ... tell us about Tie Dye!
Well, the real way of spelling true tye dye is with the Y's. My company Tye Dye University started in the last 1990s teaching classes on making tye dye.
