Diverges from: Incredible Hulk #340.
After Wolverine fatally wounded the Hulk, the Hulk quickly recovered. However, instead of slowly getting up and attacking Wolverine, the Hulk became bloodthirsty and quickly attacked Wolverine. He eventually killed Wolverine by dislodging a single Adamantium vertebra, which severed Wolverine's spinal cord.
The Adversary, a cosmic being who sought to control the omniverse, thus realized that Wolverine would no longer be a potential opponent. He used the distraction that Wolverine's death caused to kill and wound several members of the X-Men. The Adversary also used the distraction to capture Storm and Forge after they escaped from a dimensional trap that he had set earlier. Meanwhile, the Hulk, presumably under the subliminal influence of the Adversary, travelled to Dallas. Upon his arrival, he noticed that Dallas looked like an unsettled and prehistoric area; the transformation was the Adversary's doing. After the Hulk won the respect of a Native American tribe by slaying a dinosaur, Spiral reported his location to the X-Men. Seeking to avenge Wolverine's death, Rogue immediately flew to the Hulk's location and attacked him. However, he soundly defeated her. Immediately afterwards, the Hulk was attacked by the joint forces of the remaining members of the X-Men and Freedom Force, a group of reformed mutants who worked for the government. Not only did he defeat virtually all of them, he also killed the Blob, Super Sabre, Pyro and Avalanche. Since the forces of the X-Men and Freedom Force were decimated by the Hulk, the Adversary appeared and attacked the Hulk and the remaining members of the X-Men and Freedom Force. However, the Hulk unknowingly attacked him with his weakness, an object made of iron. The attack weakened the Adversary's hold over Storm and Forge which allowed them to returned to Earth and join the fight against the Adversary. Together, Storm and Forge created a gateway to banish the Adversary from their reality. To complete the spell that would banish the Adversary forever, nine souls would have had to be given freely to Forge. However, since most of the X-Men who would have sacrificed themselves were dead, Forge sacrificed himself to complete the spell. As a result, the Adversary was only temporarily removed from this reality. But, his removal permitted Roma to regain control and banish the Adversary as she saw fit.
Immediately after the Adversary's departure, the sun rose. The Hulk, who transformed back into Bruce Banner at sunrise during this period in time, reverted back to his human form. Subsequently, he was taken into custody for the murders the Hulk committed.
