A note about the storm information contained in the historical and current databases. The advisory information included in the historical storm database is based on Best Track2 analysis from the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The current storm database information is taken directly from the NHC advisories posted on the internet during an active storm. Please note that best track advisory information has advisory times of 0000,0600,1200, and 1800 GMT, while the active advisory information is formatted with 0300, 0900, 1800, and 2100 GMT3. Although it makes no direct difference in the plotting of storm tracks, the difference should be noted for future reference. TropTrack currently uses the time of day only for reporting purposes.
Footnotes:
1TropTrack has not been tested on Win 2000.
2The NHC defines a 'best track' as a subjectively smoothed path, versus a precise and very erratic fix-to-fix path, used to represent tropical cyclone movement. It is based on an assessment of all available data.
3GMT - Mean solar time at the meridian of Greenwich, England, formerly used as a basis for standard time throughout the world. Widely used by the U.S. Government for official communication.
