Making the Car Safe for You

Wheel Studs

Oversize wheel studs are not required for Enduro Racing.  They recommend that you replace the stock lugnuts with larger heavy-duty type lugnuts to prevent breakage.

Watching my first Enduro Race at CNS, one impression that was made on me, was the number of cars eliminated from the race, because of broken wheel studs. That was one of the reasons, I did not race, because I hadn't installed the oversized wheel studs. To me, this was a big safety item. Not everybody agrees with me, but I would not like to be running hard into turn 3, when the stock ones break.

I think one of the reasons that more Enduro's do not have them is time. It takes several hours to install them. You have to remove and drill out the front rotors and you have to remove and drill out the rear axles.  And don't forget you will have to drill out every wheel that is going on the racecar. Yes, it's alot of work and time. You will also have to have a special drill bit (43/64") to install the wheel studs and a drill bit (3/4") to drill out the wheels

The cost of a set of wheel studs is about $40. If you do not have the 43/64" drill bit, buy it when you order the studs. It only costs about $10 when you buy it from the Motorsports Supplier. You won't find one at Home Depot.

All of this safety stuff is about choices and chances. This is a choice, I choose to make. Each time you race you have a choice or chance: A)  Wheel Studs will never break. B) Break a set of wheel studs and limp back to the pits and watch the rest of the race. (NOTE: Racecars without wheels are much harder to trailer) C) Break a set of wheel studs, hit the wall, and watch the rest of the race, from turn 3. You get to watch the rest of the race, upclose and personal, and pray no one hits you. D) Break a set of wheel studs hit the wall and you get to go for a ride in that ugly box van with the flashing lights, wishing you could watch the rest of the race. Choice or Chance? Remember, you've got to go to work on Monday.
