February 14 2000: From An Offical Fox Press Release:
"In this milestone 150th episode of the series, Agents Mulder and Scully are followed documentary-style by a COPS camera crew throughout the course of their investigation."
February 11 2000: From Kim:
"Saw it. Only once. So details may be difficult to remember.
"They make a big point at the start of the episode to say this is "The X-Files" and as they break to each comercial the "X-Files" logo comes up. I've never seen "Cops", but it's only a half-hour, right? I found an hour of this "run and gun" style of shooting annoying after a while."
"Teaser is a LA sheriff's deputy cruising a neighborhood where there is a report of a monster. The teaser ends with the cop and "Cops" crew running for their lives."
"The Cops crew meets up with our duo, who also is searching for a monster. They are mistaken as armed suspects, but soon are on the case with the "Cops" crew."
"As reported, Scully is not happy with the TV crew. During her first encounter with them she keeps ducking behind the door of an ambulance to be out of the scene. She's also very protective of Mulder, moving him away from the crew when he starts spewing his werewolf theory. She's not sure primetime TV is ready for his theories and she worries for his career. "What career?" he responds."
"The show basically follows the cops and M&S as they travel from crime scene to crime scene in search of a monster who is either a werewolf, a pimp or Freddie Krueger (you'll understand when you see the show). Scully reluctantly puts up with the crew, but at one point declares that she "hates them" and refuses to let them ride in the car with them."
"They encounter a prostitute with bubble-gum colored hair. "Nice color for you Scully" and an amusing gay couple, whom I think are representative of people you might run into on a "Cops" episode. Mulder in this situation is exasperated and funny."
"M&S are always one step behind the monster who seems to feed off people's fear of it. The episode ends with the sunrise and alleged end of the reign of terror."
"Fashion observances: Scully's hair is still short, but it looked better I think. All that running around didn't make it as flat on her head. She's decked out in black and it seems she's got some heavy boots on because you can hear them the whole time she's running around."
"Mulder, well, Mulder looks pretty damn good in black turtleneck and pants and brown leather jacket (sorry, no glasses to complete the ensemble)."
January 30 2000: From an interview with director Michael Watkins:
"TVIndustry: How did the 'X-Cops' episode come about?
Michael Watkins: In talks of X-Files, all the little idiosyncrasies of lenses and everything we do. But we shot the whole 'X-Cops' episode on video. Cops is a real-life television show and it has a huge following and the banner song, 'Bad Boys.' They drive around with officers all over the country. What we did is -- I think it's the 150th episode -- we started off riding around with sheriff's deputies and then lo and behold, we come across Mulder and Scully investigating a case. And they get involved in the television show Cops. I watched many episodes and met with the creators. I think it's a delightful episode. It's a huge change from our look -- all those close-ups and everything. We do one-timers and turn it into that sort of TV show. I think the fans will like it. It's a lot of fun and it took a lot of courage. Everyone had to go the other direction to do it.
TVIndustry: Is this a one-time occurrence, or do you expect to do more of these shows?
Michael Watkins: No. I think it's one special one, right out of the chute. A lot of times we do fun ones. Chris did one a couple of years ago in black and white. We did one as a sort of homage to Hitchcock's Rope, trying not to have edits. Every now and then, one of these pops out. But this is all by itself. It's a lot of fun. "
January 27 2000: From The Official X-File Web Site:
"There's been a recount: Fox has decided that #12 on 2/20 will be the 150th episode of The X-Files."
January 26 2000: From LC Fenster:Response to the Question, "Why are M&S under arrest?":
"What's happened is both the COPS and M&Sc were out chasing the suspect, and the COPS stumble across M&Sc. Obviously, the COPS order them to put their hands up. M&Sc identify themselves as FBI, but needless to say they comply with the order until that can be proven. The officer who is frisking Mulder is actually responding to Mulder's declaration that he is FBI and that his ID is in his front pocket. It's not a criminal frisk for weapons, in other words, and M&Sc are NOT under arrest.
"A moment after that picture, the detective finds Mulder's ID and all is happy in serve-and-protect land -- until Mulder tells them their suspect is a werewolf, of course. "
January 22 2000: From The Official X-File Web Site:
"X-Cops" will tentatively air on 2/20. Entertainment Weekly, USA Today and "Entertainment Tonight" are all running features on the episode in February. News about a possible live web chat with Vince Gilligan will be coming soon, schedueled for before the episode airs."
December 17 1999: From The Official X-File Web Site:
"Directed by Michael Watkins, episode #12 will be shot in the style of the series Cops on Betacam 600 video cameras. The camera crew of Cops crosses paths with Mulder and Scully, who are investigating a monster loose on the streets of Los Angeles. Vince Gilligan wrote the script entitled "X-COPS"
December 14 1999: From Entertainment Weekly:
The February 20th episode of THE X-FILES will pay homage to COPS, with a story about a rookie cop and film crew who bump into Mulder and Scully on the streets of Los Angeles. 'X-FILES, in my mind, is sort of a cool and different COPS,' says co-executive producer Vince Gilligan, who explains the show will have a distinct X-FILES feel, so that viewers don't think the show has been preempted."
December 10 1999: From TV Guide:
"Hey, X-Files fans, break out the brewskies and polish up the Pinto, Chris Carter & Co. are working on a special episode that mimics the style of Fox`s shaky-cam reality show, COPS. The brainchild of X-Files coexecutive producer Vince Gilligan, the episode will follow a rookie cop on the streets of Los Angeles, where he bumps into Mulder and Scully. "X-Files, in my mind, is sort of a cool and different COPS," says Gilligan. Still under consideration is whether the February 20 show will open with the familiar COPS logo. 'We don`t want people tuning in, seeing COPS, and saying, `What the heck? Our show was preempted this week.` We need to try to make clear that it`s indeed an episode of The X-Files.' Okay, but can we at least get to see Mulder in a grimy tank top?"
December 6 1999: From Autumn:
"So here's some info. The plan is to shoot this thing on video 'gun and run' style, and even try to copy the COPS music, legends, and title sequence. They'll curse a lot and bleep out what won't pass the censors. The COPS in this episode are the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. There is a full moon and a report comes in of a claw monster lurking about. Oh, and Scully? She *hates* the camera. Well, they [M&S] happen to be looking for the 'claw monster' too when the cops being filmed run into them and they join forces."
December 3 1999: From The Official X-Files Web Site:
"Television cameras catch Mulder and Scully in the act. Find out in episode #12. "
November 26 1999: From Elwood Blues:
"This episode is scheduled to begin shooting on December 14, 1999.
November 14 1999: From Trogdon:
"The episode is about a guy who can steal souls; Mulder and Scully do some soul searching mixed in with some Ancient Chinese Religion."
November 12 1999: From TNO:
"This episode is is about a guy who can steal souls.
