Although a small town, Merced California did have a great Rocky following. It was already doing equally well in other surrounding towns like Modesto & Fresno. In SF and LA, Sacramento and even in Davis, Rocky Horror had started to grow even as much as a year earlier.
The City of Merced has a few good theaters, among them, the UA Cinema on Main St. right next to the Hotel Tioga. In January of 1978 the UA Cinema became one of a handful of theaters in California, to host midnight showings of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".
The movie was a huge success in town and people were really talking about it. A Halloween Disco Party was planned, and a candlelight procession made its way down the Main St. of this very surprised city. One other thing Merced had at the time was the largest Discotheque on the West Coast  (for all you 70's fans)
The next time I went to rocky, was in costume with my friends from High School. I put together the costumes by myself and talked everyone into going and picking a character. I was Riff Raff. I really wanted to be Riff, but the next time we went I got recruited to play Frank and that never changed. After a while I was going to Rocky Horror on a regular basis with different friends, always in costume, and generally not very well planned, but allot of fun.
The UA in Merced was managed by Robin Adam. his ennitial planning for Rocky kept it going in the Central Valley for years.
