Web Page Design: Hypertext Links 01

At this point, you have been taught all the markup essentials to treat HTML as a word processor - you can create a single page and the basic types of layout. But what makes the Web so unique is the ability to connect two points in web space with a hypertext link.

In this section we will cover the basic types of hypertext links you will find necessary to create web pages. There are other types of hypertext links for special purposes, you can look in the references at the end of this section for more information.

To understand hypertext links, you need to know a little bit about Unix file systems, because that is the convention for specifying target files in directories in a hypertext link. You will also need to know a little about Uniform Resource Locators (URLs). We will start with some simple examples and build upon them.
