COURSE OBJECTIVE

Stainless steels and alloys are perceived to be corrosion resistant but often failed unexpectedly during service. This course will discuss everything you wanted to know about stainless steels and alloys including super-duplex stainless steels and high-nickel-chrome alloys, from its classifications, compositions, microstructures, mechanical properties to corrosion resistance properties – why they resist corrosion and how they fail in service conditions.

COURSE CONTENTS
  1. Introduction
  2. Stainless steels and alloys: what they are and how they are different from carbon steels/mild steels/low alloy steels. Classifications of stainless steels: microstructures and compositions of stainless steels and alloys. Mechanical properties of stainless steels and alloys. Overview of corrosion resistant properties of stainless steels and alloys. The good, the bad and the ugly examples in selecting stainless steels for specific applications.
  3. Why they resist corrosion
  4. The naturally formed passive films vs conventional coatings. the formation and breakdown of passive films, thicknesses of passive films. Stability of passivity and applications of stainless steels in marine, power generation, oil and petrochemical industries: effect of alloying elements –Cr, Ni, Mo, N, W, Ti, Nb; effects of processing/environmental conditions – residual stress, chloride concentration, temperature, flow rate, bacterial activities.
  5. How they fail in service conditions
  6. General corrosion, galvanic corrosion, pitting, crevice corrosion, intergranular attack/weld decay, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen induced cracking, cavitation damage, bacterial or microbiologically influenced corrosion
  7. Good design and materials selection for the optimal performance of stainless steels and alloys: The DOs and DON’Ts.
