The House on the Hill

People say that the joy of a holiday is that it only comes one day a year. That’s the one thing I hate most about holidays. You see, I get so excited around Christmas that I get sick and have to stay home from the parties because I have a high fever. This happens every year. Last year at Thanksgiving, I was so inpatient for the turkey, that when it got to my plate, I ate it so fast I choked on a bone, and had to have CPR! Out of all the holidays, I would have to say Halloween is my favorite. Everything about it gives me a warm feeling in my tummy. The candy, ghosts, witches, ogars, sheets flying around uncontrollably through a haunted house. Everything about this holiday I enjoy. As a matter of fact, I love it so much, I went to the public library, and took out a book by the name of "the history of Halloween". The history kinda goes like this. Along time ago, people used to celebrate the dead by having huge bonfires in fields, and dressing up like ghouls to recognize the dead. That’s all I really remember from the time I checked it out.

I was spending the summer in Alabama with my grandmother. I really liked it, running free in the fields, under the warm bright sun, laying on my grandmothers porch picking things out of the clouds. I saw one that even looked like me! Yes my grandfather owns a farm, I love it alot, there was everything to do, it was in his family since the 1700's, it’s a really beautiful place.

Even though I was having a great time, the third week, my game boy had ran out of batteries, and I had seen all the drive in movies, so I decided to call my best friend Steph. She loves Halloween too. We always talk about ghosts, and witches, and we even go to a real haunted house every weekend! It’s a really spooky place! We have known each other for our whole lives, so our parent’s let us sleep over each others homes all the time. I asked my grandmother if she could come down and spend some time and she said she would pay for the train ticket. I called and asked, lucky enough, she could come running in the fields, and spend the rest of July in the country. She arrived on a Wednesday night. She looked tan, and excited to see me, she smiled, and then tackled me to the ground. All the dogs on the farm wagged their tales, and bark, they seemed happy to see her too.

That night we went for a walk. We saw some other kids playing football in their yards, and some others swimming in the pond. We stopped at the pond; we heard some kids arguing so we listened. "No I don’t want to", a little boy said. He looked about 9, and had long brown hair that fell in his eyes. Another boy, who looked about our age said, "CHICKEN!" The little boy snapped back, "AM NOT!" Steph ran over and said, "What's going on?" The older one said to her, "This little CHICKEN is too scared to go into the spook house up on the hill at the end of town!" At that time the little guy blushed, and swam away to play with his other friends.. I don’t blame him, I would be scared at his age too! I walked up to him and said, "So, tell us about this spook house." Here is what he told us~ back in the mid-1700's a rich family built a giant mansion, biggest house in town, the dad was kind of creepy, he was a very tall thin man, with black hair, and beady black eyes. He was very rich, but noone knew what he did. Then one night no lights were on at the house and everyone wondered what was going on because they had big parties almost every night! Well, all the people in town just thought they went on vacation, but weeks later, still no lights were on, so some men went up there to see what was up, they broke in a window, to see the whole family dead, everyone lay there peacefully, except the father, he was cut up, and placed in every room of the house.

"THATS NOT TRUE!!!", screamed a little girl who had long red hair. She also looked about nine and said not to listen to her brother. "He always tries to scare kids in town." "YEP", said her brother, "I looove Halloween, ghost candy, witches, anything, but one thing I can tell you is that house is home to spooks, I have seen them myself!" His sister rolled her eyes and splashed away. Me and Steph looked at each other and smiled, and at the same time we said, " ME TOO!" We all laughed, and then the boy said, "Hey, I’m Nick, nice to meet you, and you are?" "Oh, I'm uhh Stephanie, and this is Nate," and I said hi. "So can you take us up to the house?" "Sure," he said. "Meet me on Parker Road tonight at 12:00, and bring some flashlights ok?" "Cool," we said, and ran away. We were so excited we could barely eat the huge dinner manny had made. I call my grandmother manny. Anyway, after dinner we packed our bags, and waited, she played some basketball, and watched All In The Family. God that show is quality.

It was 11:30, we snuck out my window, and crept all the way to Parker Road. There we met Nick, once again. "Augh!!!!!!!!! Do I have to be here!?!?," cried his little sister. "YES," said Nick, "I don’t want you telling mom that I’m gone." She kicked a leaf that made its way to the ground. We climbed the hill, up to the top, and slid around to the back. "See!," said Nick, "This is the broken window where the men broke in." He lowered his voice, then screamed, "TO FIND THE BODIES OF THE ENTIRE FAMILY!" We all jumped back, then laughed, "Come on," shouted Nick, "Lets go before the ghost finds out we are here!" We went in the broken window, and tiptoed to the hall. We all clicked on our flashlights. I was surprised of what I saw. Real surprised! Dust. About a half a foot of it. We were all freaked out and it was gross!
