LADIES' OPEN BONSPIEL DEC 7
2002/2003 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Lorraine Wilson and more than twenty volunteer helpers put on another successful Ladies' Open last month. A full slate of 16 teams enjoyed two games, three meals and beautiful prizes provided by sponsors Van-Gent Enterprises, Lynja Injections, Hogarths, Wine Not, Flowers by Barbara, Touch of Class, The Napanee Beaver, Proctor and Gamble, Picturesque Gallery and Lipsons. Donna McQuillian's Garrison rink from Kingston was top point-getter. Host teams were very hospitable allowing another foursome from Garrison and teams from Quinte (Belleville) and Riverside (Ottawa) to choose prizes before Benita Murphy's team, top finishers from NDCC and tied for 4th, stepped forward. Hmmm… two games, three meals, great prizes and the bar was open all day, no wonder there are already teams signing up for next year. Good job Lorraine and helpers!
HEARD BEHIND THE GLASS
There are four stages of life:
1) You believe in Santa Claus.
2) You don't believe in Santa Claus.
3) You are Santa Claus.
4) You look like Santa Claus.
And from Mrs. Claus:
Time may be a great healer, but it's a lousy beautician.

ICE RENTAL/USE BY MEMBERS
There is a calendar of events on the bulletin board for all members to book rentals, etc. Any use of the ice and/or lounge over and above league play is recorded on this calendar by the Rental Director and the Ice Maker. We make a good portion of our revenue from Rentals and this calendar must be kept up to date. Any member(s) wishing to use the ice/lounge for other than league play is asked to please book the time with the Rental Director, Earle Bush. Also, our Ice Maker, Hugh Sharpe must be informed of any use of the ice so he can be prepared to ensure the ice is ready for the next event.

JUNIOR CURLING
Junior curling is off and running. We have 20 beginner curlers this year, which brings our total to 46 junior curlers. We have 3 teams involved in the Goodyear league, two Bantams and one Junior. These teams compete about once a month against teams from Brockville, Kingston and Belleville. Our junior men's and women's teams were very fortunate on New Year's Day to compete with 4 junior Swiss National teams at a bonspiel in Napanee. The bonspiel was followed by a clinic which the Swiss put on for our younger juniors. Based on the smiles we saw that day, we can safely say that it was an experience which none of them will ever forget. Thank you to Will Hamilton for making it all possible and for the pride he still has for the Napanee Curling Club.
Our Napanee Special Olympics curling team also known as "The Cool Rocks" are on their way to the southeastern regionals in Campbellford on January 11th. They are very excited about the event and have been practicing hard for the competition.
CURLING ETIQUETTE
After delivering the rock, don't kneel or leave your hand on the ice for an extended period while watching the progress of that perfect shot. It can melt the pebble on the ice and affect the path of future rocks.
THANKS FELLOW CURLERS
NDCC curler Rob Dickson left for the Canada Cup in Kamloops B.C. on Monday Jan. 5 and wanted to pass on his thanks to all those who helped him get there.
Good luck Rob!
WHY! WHY! WHY!
So, if sweeping actually reduces how much a rock curls, why do skips keep yelling sweep when they want a draw to come across more behind a guard or a guard to better cover an opening. The theory is to let the rock start curling early as it heads down the ice. This allows it to develop a cross-sheet component in its path. Then, as the stone approaches the House, it is already going diagonally and additional sweeping keeps it going further across the sheet. The additional path length gained by sweeping, more than makes up for the additional curvature of the path which would result if the rock were not swept.
