Hong
Kong History Part II.

The
history of China is actually a really sad story. China is like a piece of
meatloaf which hungry people (United State, Britain, Japan...etc.) want a bite
from it. And the worst thing was that some of them imported opium into China to
mess up the people inside and then they join together to form a super power and
invaded China. Of course the rulers of China at the time, the Qing were quite
inept. Heck, they were really Manchus, not traditional Chinese. How in the world can China protect itself if
other nations use advanced technologies to fight in a war!!! Maybe this
is a way to success? Well, war is not a good thing to do, but without war
we may not have the present and the future... it is just a developing process.
Nowadays, a lot of people and politicians have been attacking China about its
politics, human rights, limits on the freedoms of speech, freedoms of this, freedom of that...
but they need to understand the Chinese government have been putting a lot of
effort to improve all the above categories. To make improvement it takes
time, it cannot be done in one or two days. The reason why China decided
not to change its policies immediately from communist into capitalism is because
the Chinese government learnt from the collapse of the Soviet Union. The
USSR tried to make an immediate change from communism to
capitalism. This sudden change made a lot of people suffer because it is
hard to adjust into a new system immediately. This immediate change lead
to the collapse and end of the Soviet Union. The Chinese government
believe that immediate
change would not work so it would be better to make change gradually.
That's why the Chinese government called themselves Capital Socialism
Government. Everyone, please give China the time to prove
it.
After Hong
Kong returned to the China rule, things have not been change much.
Political changes: a little bit. Daily life: same stuff. Everyone
is still working hard and earning as much money as they can. It is
basically the first goal in every Hong Kong"nese" mind "SHOW ME
THE MONEY". It is
not good to be too materialistic. But surrounding environment (unstable political
and social factors) force H.K. people to think toward it. That is most of our
reality.
A lot of
my friends keep asking me, "Since China is a communist government, and now
that Hong
Kong has returned to China's rule you automatically became a communist right?"
I want to ask some of my American friends, "If President Clinton lied about
his relationship with Monica Lewinsky in front of the TV. Does that mean
all the Americans are big Liars?!?" In this moment, right here right now I want to tell everyone of you:
"I am not a
Communist, OK !!"
Even
though China is not like the United States, Japan or even close to Hong Kong
(Special Administrative Region), things are getting better. The Chinese
government understands the important of opening their market because they not
only can absorb foreign investment but also new skills, ideas and technologies
from overseas. Those are all the good elements and opportunities to
improve the economy of China and also the quality of people and living
condition. I am sure one day my nation will be very similar to the U.S. or
Japan.
