TRAINING COURSE FOR VOLUNTEERS 

IN THE SOCIAL FIELD 

As from Monday, 1st October , 2001, the Third World Group will be holding a training course for volunteers in the social field. The 13 weekly sessions will be held at Dar il-Koperattivi, Melita Street, Valletta, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm.

The aim of this course is to introduce different aspects of voluntary work within the social field to all those who would like to take up this activity. It is also intended as a booster for those persons who are already working in this field.

The course is being coordinated by Roderick Agius who has just be appointed President of the Group for this year.

The course, which will be in Maltese, will deal with the following topics:

  • “The Work Carried Out by Local Non-Governmental Organisations” (Prof Anthony M. Abela)

  • “The Psychology of Helping” (Bryan Magro)

  • “Helping Skills” (Jenny Zammit and George Zarb)

  • “The Preferential Option for the Poor –  The Christian’s Option” (Fr Renè Camilleri)

  • “Poverty in Malta, Myth or Realty” (Carmen Delia);

  • “Different Perspectives About Environmental and Poverty Issues” (Vince Caruana)

  • “Elements of Social Work in Voluntary Work” (Agnes Galea Curmi)

  • “Group Dynamics” (Dione Mifsud)

  • "International Cooperation” (Vince Caruana)

  • “Ethical Principles in Voluntary Work” (Roderick Agius);

  • “Globilisation” (Vince Caruana)

  • “Cooperatives and the Third Sector” (Dr Godfrey Baldacchino)

  • “A National Policy for Voluntary Work”

Due to radical changes, especially in these last two decades, in communication experienced by the countries in the northern hemisphere we have seen considerable change in the way voluntary organizations operate. This course will deal with the traditional aspects of voluntary work keeping in mind the constant changes and challenges which volunters face on a local level in a globalised environment.

Everybody is invited to participate in the course. No particular competences are required. There will be a nominal participation fee of Lm5 to cover expenses.
