Prehistoric People in Oklahoma

 

Prehistoric Oklahomans came to Oklahoma
                    about 15,000 years ago.

   1.  Probably crossed a land bridge called
                            the Bering Strait  Theory
    -

   2.  Followed migrating herds up and down
                North and South America

   3.  Native Americans had no knowledge of the
                    wheel nor could they write




 
 

   Historic Oklahoma comes from written records

   In 1541 Coronado explored Oklahoma and wrote
                        in his journal creating Oklahoma
                        history for the first time
 



 
 

   2 types of prehistoric people

   1.  Clovis man  found at Domebo mammoth kill site
 
Carbon 14 testing was used @ Domebo to determine the age of the site about 11,000 yrs ago.  Clovis arrow points

   2.  Folsom man
 
Folsom man used arrow points such as these to kill animals for food, tools, and shelter

   Late Prehistoric Age came the Spiro Epoch

   Began around the time of Christ and ended
                              around A.D. 1500
 
 

   1.  Known as mound builders

   2.  Spiro epoch marks the "golden age" of
                            Oklahoma pre-history

   3.  Spiro is one of many mounds builders in U.S.



 
 

      Most early Oklahomans spoke different
        languages but had similar Muskhogean stock
 
 

   At the time of the introduction of Europeans to
    Oklahoma Quapaws lived in eastern Ok along
   the Arkansas River.

   Querechos AKA Plains-Apaches

   1.  no permanent home

   2.  followed the buffalo herds and

   3.  used tipi for houses

   4.  Coronado   wrote about this
                    settlement called Quivira
