INTRODUCTION
This text tells you about how you can make inaccessible directories in Windows.
You can always create those hidden directories by selecting hidden in the folder properties box, but they can be seen by selecting a folder option to show even hidden files/directories. There is another way to create inaccessible directories. Read the Disclaimer at the end of the text..

Valid File/Directory names in Windows
Though Windows 9x is based on DOS, it cannot have all file or directory names that DOS files or directories can have. Directories in DOS and in Windows cannot have some characters in directories or file names. These characters are: \,/,:,*,?,",<,> and |. However, there are other characters, that are valid in DOS, but cannot be recognised by Windows.
The md / mkdir DOS command
(Taken from "Learning DOS" text by Myself at InfoPrince.com) The md command creates a directory of a required name.
syntax: md
ex: C:\>md abc
This creates a directory, abc under c:\.
The DOS rename command
The ren command lets you rename an existing file or directory.
syntax: ren
ren
ex: C:\>ren abc.txt xyz.dat
C:\>ren abc xyz

The DOS Special Characters
Earlier, I discussed about valid Windows/DOS filenames and directory names. I also mentioned that there are many characters, that are valid in DOS, but cannot be recognised by Windows. These characters can be generated in DOS by pressing the key and simultaneously a combination of atleast 3 numeric keys on the Num Pad(generally only 3 keys).
Some of the key combinations are:


      1+9+1  1+8+1  1+5+8  2+0+9  2+1+9  2+2+9  2+3+5  2+4+5
      1+9+2  1+8+2  2+0+0  2+1+0  2+2+0  2+7+6  2+3+6  2+4+6
      1+9+3  1+8+3  2+0+1  2+1+1  2+2+1  1+7+7  2+3+7  2+4+7
      1+9+4  1+8+4  2+0+2  2+1+2  2+2+2  1+7+8  2+3+8  2+4+8

Important: These key combinations are to be used with the  key
           pressed simultaneously.

When used in Windows, these key combinations give other Windows special characters. Ex: + 1+9+2 = + The + 2+5+5 key combination is an empty character and is something like invisible in DOS.

Making Inaccessible Directories
Follow these steps to make an inaccessible directory:
Run command.com (Start>Run>Command).
At the command prompt(C:\blahblah\>), type mkdir(the make directory command in MS DOS) and a space and any of the above listed key combinations. Now, when you try to access this directory in Windows, you'll see a directory with the name _ and when you try to access it you'll get the following error message:

"The folder C:\blahblah\_ doesn't exist."

If there's an existing folder like C:\blahblah and you want to make it inaccessible, you can use the DOS rename command. When you want to access it again in Windows, rename it back using the ren command and access it in Windows.

Note:
You can use more than one (till eight) of these characters in a directory name. Eg: + 1+9+5 and + 1+9+7
