Mr. Weaving was born in Nigeria in 1960 (4th April), but
left that country when he was still a toddler, living in South Africa, England
and Australia during his childhood and adolescence. He finally fixed
residence in Australia in 1976. After completing his studies, Mr. Weaving
attended the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), graduating in 1981. He
started working steadily in theatre, television and cinema shortly thereafter
- his Australian breakthrough came in 1984 with the mini-series
"Bodyline". He became a familiar face to international audiences
following the release of the cult-hit "The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen
of the Desert" in 1994, but mainstream international recognition only
arrived in 1999 with "The Matrix".
He received the AFI (Australian Film Institute)
Best Actor Award for his work in "Proof" (1991) and in "The
Interview" (1998), having received a further nomination for
"Priscilla". His performance in "The Interview" was also
awarded the Best Actor Prize at the Montreal Film Festival.
He regularly collaborates with the same film-makers - such
as Stavros Kazantzidis ("Road to Alice", "True Love and
Chaos", "Strange Planet", "Russian Doll") or the
Kennedy Miller Production team ("Bodyline", "Bangkok
Hilton", "Dirtwater Dynasty", "Babe" and its sequel).
Mr. Weaving also occasionally lends his talent to Short
Films and even music-videos (such as the recent Jenny Morris single
"Downtime").
