The Power of One - Chapter 6

Jackie: “No. No, Michael, keep fighting.”

Michael: “I’ve been fighting this too long. The Seer was right. There’s no point.” – His voice had changed. It was still his but the evil was so clear now. –

A black fire surrounded Michael. When the fire subsided, Michael was wearing black, his green eyes now emanating a black light.

Michael: “Leave now. Leave before I kill you both.”

Jackie: “No. We’re not leaving without you.”

As an answer to that response, Michael used his power to create fire, surrounding Jackie. Alex gestured and exploded objects around Michael to distract him. Because it didn’t seem to work, Alex pulled out a vial of holy water he had kept in his pocket for such an occasion and heaved it at Michael. When the vial was over Michael’s head, Alex exploded it and the contents of the vial spilled all over him. It wasn’t working.

Alex: “We need to say it.”

Jackie: “No. We’re not going to vanquish him. I’d rather die.”

The fire surrounding Jackie started to close in on her. How else was he supposed to save her then killing the source of the flames?

Alex: I’m not gonna let you die, Jackie.

“Michael, now out of my sight.
Out of my mind and out of the light…

Jackie: “Alex, NO. If you do it, I’ll never forgive you. You’ll lose us both.”

He’d already lost one of them. If Jackie was true to her word, there wasn’t anything he could do. Except…

Alex: The binding spell. – Alex closed his eyes and crossed thoughts with Michael, something he recently discovered he could do although not sure how. Because the binding spell needed some sort of contact to work and because he was pretty sure that Michael wasn’t about to give him his hand, Alex crossed Michael’s mind with his. –

“I take your thoughts and mine
And with this spell I will entwine
Your powers I’ll forever bind
From now until the end of time.”

The fire disappeared. Jackie had scorch marks on her arms but nothing really serious. Alex grabbed her arm and they orbed out of the underworld and into the manor. When they landed, Jackie was struggling to escape Alex’s hold and orb back to Michael. Luke grabbed her and healed her burns. No one said anything. Luke orbed to The Elders to explain the day’s actions.

That night, the three of them, Luke, Jackie, and Alex, sat in the family room.

Jackie: “So do you think the binding spell worked?”

Alex: “No. I couldn’t really find his mind. The tonic must have blocked it. The spell should’ve worn off by now.” – He turns from Jackie and faces Luke. –

Jackie: “So what happens now? What do we do?”

Luke: “There isn’t much you can do. Just keep fighting.”

Alex: “Keep fighting…after this? The Elders still expect their ‘precious Charmed Ones’ to fight evil when evil is our own brother?” – He looks at Jackie, then back at Luke. – “No Luke. I don’t think I can. I quit. I lost my mother and father to evil and I just lost Mike. Tell them to find someone else.” He gets up and starts for his room.

Jackie: “You’re not serious are you? We can’t just stop.”

Alex: “Well, we’re about to. And even if we did go on there’d be no point.”

Luke: “There isn’t anyone else. The three of you are the only ones strong enough for this.”

Alex: “I doubt Michael would want to vanquish himself.”

Jackie: “What do you mean?”

Alex: “Without Michael, there is no power of three. We aren’t ‘Charmed’ anymore. There’s no way we could continue the fight. Evil won… we failed.”

Luke orbs to stand in front Alex and grabs his shirt, clearly angry.

Luke: “You are not going to give this up. You have to keep fighting. If you don’t…The Order will fall.”

Alex: - He grabs Luke’s hand and takes them off his shirt. – “Watch me.” – He pushes Luke to the side and goes to the attic. The book of shadows sat there closed. The cover was different again. The three joining ovals that made up the triquetra were separated, one of them taking the form of a thorn vine, the other two still the bright gold metal. ----------------------- The Source’s Chambers: Piper: “So…how do you feel?”

Michael: “Free. At last free from all that fighting. I don’t know why I didn’t give into this before.” – He turns to look at a crystal on one of the center altars and puts his hand out in front of him. – Phoebe: “What are you doing?” Michael: “Just trying something.” – He stares at the crystal and focuses on it and only it erasing everything else from sight. For a second his eyes gave off a black light. The crystal became red and became surrounded by fire but went through no other change. – “I was right. My powers were going to be expanded. Just like in the dream.” Phoebe: “And that’s just the beginning.” Paige: “Phoebe, aren’t you worried about what The Seer said about the Black Council?” Michael: “The Black Council of Mages?” Piper: “Yeah. How did you know about that? The Elders didn’t tell anybody except their white-lighters and they were sworn to secrecy.” Michael: “Our white-lighter told us couple months ago. He said the oracle, Baram…something, predicted the fall of The Elders and the rise of The Arch-Council.” Phoebe: “So she was right?” Michael: “Is that bad?” Phoebe: “According to prophecies if the Arch-Council rises all witches and warlocks will become mortal and live a life based on their karma.” Michael: “So what do we do?” Phoebe: “Not much we can do. And there’s no one we could ask since you vanquished The Seer.” Next to Piper, a clutter of black orbs appears. Piper: “Leo! What a nice surprise.” - They lean in for a small kiss. – “Michael this is my husband, Leo.” – Leo looks Michael in the eyes and notices something but because he wasn’t sure he kept it to himself. – Leo: “Wow. You guys actually managed to turn a ‘Charmed One’ evil.” Paige: “Did you doubt we could?” Leo: “Well he was a…” Piper: “ A ‘Charmed One’. Yes, we know.” - Obviously tired of hearing the phrase over and over again. – Leo: “Yeah but he was also half white-lighter. Paige was the last of you three to change because her white-lighter side kept fighting.” Phoebe: “Leo what could you tell us about the Dark Council of Mages?” Leo: “Not much except that their abilities exceed those of witches. I can try to find something out if you want?” Piper all of a sudden became confused. Piper: “Wha…what do you mean? Orb up to The Elders to ask them?” Leo: “Yup.” Paige: “That’s crazy. They’ll catch you.” Leo: “No they won’t. I’ll just disguise my orb. Be back in a little bit.” – He closed his eyes and became surrounded by the dark orbs. As he started to rise the orbs changed from black to blue. – Phoebe: “Wonder why he never offered to do that before?” Piper: “He hates Cole. Remember?” Phoebe nods an ‘oh yeah, I forgot’ and Paige turns to Michael. Paige: “So…up for a bit of training?” Michael: “Training?” Piper: “Yeah, usually Cole handles that type of stuff but since we’re the only ones left as a challenge we got to do it.” Michael: “Sure. Yeah, I guess.” Piper, Phoebe and Paige surround Michael. Even with his powers expanded he didn’t think he could take on all three witches at the same time. He kept circling so that he could keep an eye on them all but they were rotating as well which made that a little harder. Out of nowhere a fireball hits Michael’s back. He turns to look at Phoebe who is standing with her hand out forward. Phoebe: “Always be alert. Use all your senses.” ----------------------- A Week Later, The Manor: Alex sat in his room looking up at the night sky. Everything was lost. To Alex, evil had triumphed over good and nothing could save the world from its corruption. But Luke was right. They were The Elder’s only hope. But Alex wouldn’t unless Mike came looking for it. The door swung open hard and Jackie walked in with blood on her arm. Alex looked at her and jumped to his feet. Jackie: “We got trouble. A demon just came in here to ‘finish us off’. I managed to fight him away but it’s definitely coming back.” Alex: “All right. Well if he’s coming back we might as well kill it if we could. Get Luke to heal you then come up to the attic. I’ll see what I can find. What can you tell me about him?” Jackie: “Umm…he was carrying a short blade or sword and he was immune to my deflection power.” Alex: “If he’s immune to our powers it makes it that much harder to defeat him. Especially if it’s just the two of us.” This has to stop. Jackie summoned Luke, who they haven’t seen for a couple of days, so that he could heal her arm. She informed him on what’s going on as they went up to the attic. Luke looked at Alex. Luke: “So you’ve changed your mind.” Alex: “Nope. But I don’t want us dead either.” – He stops at a page with a demon holding a Spanish Rapier. – “Is this him?” Jackie goes to the book to see if the demon on the page was the demon she had encountered. Jackie: “Yeah that’s him.” Alex:

Litvack
Litvak is an upper level demon that rewards his minions with demonic weapons. These weapons fire a pulsing ray, which disrupts the victim. He is immune to the powers of witches and uses people’s essence (astral echo) to form telepathic links with them. Litvack is known to read minds, astral project and control the flames of hell. Jackie: “Is there a vanquish?” Alex: “Yeah. We have to stab him with one of his own weapons. He said he was coming back right?” Jackie: “Yeah.” – Something broke downstairs. – “And by that sound I’d say he’s already here.” Alex went over to the old chest in the corner of the room. From there he took out about ten potion bottles. Luke: “What are those?” Alex: “Potions. Some that replicate my freezing power, and some that have poison.” – He picks one up that looks like lava. – “This one replicates Mike’s fire power.” – He throws that one to Jackie and a couple more. – “Since our powers won’t work I’m kinda hoping these will. Those other ones replicate your deflection power. Just throw it on the floor in front of you and it should do the trick.” Jackie: She looks at the vile that looked like lave. – “Who were you planning on using these on?” – Although she was really asking ‘were you planning on using these on Mike.’ Alex: “Didn’t you ever hear the expression ‘fight fire with fire’?” He walks past her with a potion ready in his hands. As he passes her all she does is look at him surprised he’d actually do it. He’d actually vanquish Michael. Downstairs the demon was destroying everything in the house. Alex caught his attention by throwing a fire potion at the demons back. It seemed to hurt him but not really. The demon turned around and pulled out his sword. He swung it across the air and a fire bolt shot at Alex. Jumping at the right time to dodge it he lands on the floor next to him but gets hit by another fire bolt. Jackie runs down and throws a freezing potion. Litvak froze but slowly came out of it. It gave enough time for Jackie to help Alex up. Alex: “These don’t work so well. No point in wasting them now.” Jackie hurled a fire potion at the demon but it didn’t seem to have effect. He shot a fireball from his hand and she dropped two of the deflection potions. The fireballs reverted to the demon but again it didn’t have an effect. She threw another freezing potion but Alex froze it right in front of her. He snatched it from the air and put it in his pocket. Alex: “I said that we shouldn’t waste them on him.” Jackie: “Why so you could use them on Mike? I’d rather die then kill him.” She threw another potion at a wall. Alex: “So you’re saying that if he comes here and starts a battle, you’re gonna let him kill you?” Jackie: “He won’t kill me.” Alex laughs a little then looks back at her. Alex: “Oh he’ll kill you all right. And kill me to the second he gets the chance. Look I get that he’s our brother and vanquishing him is horrible but I’m not going to let him kill you or me because of that. No. He comes looking for a fight, I’m gonna give him one. I don’t care if you end up hating me forever. Mike’s evil now. Even if not by choice, he’s evil. And with or without your help…if he comes here…I’m gonna kill him.” – Out of nowhere he’s thrown at the demon. – Jackie looks at Alex with confusion. She was angry with him but knew that he was right. How she managed to throw Alex at the demon was something she didn’t know. The demon grabbed Alex so that he couldn’t move a put a small blade to his throat. He runs the blade slowly across his neck and cuts Alex then throws him to the floor. Litvak: “From your brother.” – He laughs and throws a rolled piece of parchment at Alex. – “And this message is for the girl.” Luke had his hands over Alex’s neck but the wound was taking longer than expected to heal. Luke was worried that the wound wasn’t even healing. Jackie: How do I get his sword? I could try a summoning spell but I’ve never written a spell before. I got to do it.
“I summon the sword to my side
Be a weapon for me to guide
Umm…By the ending of this rhyme
What is yours will become mine.”

The sword vanished from Litvak’s hand and began orbing at Jackie. Before it the orbs reached her she put her hand in front of her and absorbed it. Her hand was glowing blue as she held the orbed sword inside her ready to throw it back. Litvak laughed thinking her spell had failed and approached Jackie with another blade determined to do to her what he did to Alex. Litvak: “Time to die.” Jackie: “Yup. Time to die.” She pressed her hand on his stomach and released the orbs. When she took her hand away the sword appeared, piercing through Litvak’s stomach. He looked down at the sword then back at Jackie. He started yelling as the fire consumed him. When he was gone she went over to Luke who was still healing Alex. Jackie: “Why is it taking so long?” Luke: “Because he’s nearly dead. Give me your hand.” – Luke took Jackie’s hand and put it under his. – “Let the power flow through you.” The cut across Alex’s throat stopped bleeding and slowly began to come together. When they finished healing him Jackie went to grab the piece of parchment. On it was a message:

Jackie:

Meet me in the mausoleum in the graveyard. We have something important to talk about. Don’t tell Alex. He’ll stop you from coming. Tomorrow night at eleven, please show up.

Michael

Alex: “What’s it say?” – Checking his neck with his hand for any cut. – The parchment ignited and turned to ashes. Jackie didn’t say anything but looks at Alex’s hand over his neck, then at the ashes in her hand.
