"Hello. Is Johnny Wright there?"
"Who may I say is calling?"
"Just tell him 'It's a good friend from Orlando.' He'll know who it is."
"One moment please. Can you hold for a minute? He's just getting out of a meeting."
"Sure I'll hold."
"Thank you."
"Hello?"
"Hi, Johnny?"
"Yes. How may I help you?"
"Well, I need you to come check out this new group that's getting started. I think you might be interested in managing them."
"Really? And what made you think that?"
"Because, one of the boys in this group is special to me and I want to make sure that he's kept safe."
"Ok. Where can I find them?"
"They are having a meeting on Monday at eight o'clock. Do you think you could come here prior to that, and go with them to
this meeting?"
"I'd be happy to Lynn. I can be there at 6. That way I can get to know the boys' morning routine a bit. Get to know if they are
really into this or just kinda hanging out hoping it'll come to them on a silver platter."
"I think you'll be impressed with these boys. They seem to actually want to work for this."
"And I'm sure the main reason you're so worried about these boys is that Justin is one of them. Am I right?"
"You got it. I need someone who can spend all their time with him and make sure this Louis Perlman isn't taking advantage of
him and his friends."
"They're working with Perlman? Damn, I already have a group with him. Oh, well, that might actually make life a bit easier. I
already know what to look for in his contracts."
"Is he alright with your other group? I haven't had a chance to meet him yet? The boys won't let me tag along. JC and Joey
have kinda taken over in keeping an eye on Justin though. They're both very protective of that boy."
"That's good. So we have JC, Joey and Justin. Is that it or what?"
"No, there's one more in the group. He's older though. His name is Chris."
"So we have a four person group? What kinda music they sing?"
"I think they're gonna be singing that pop music. I'm not really sure. You'll have to come over and meet them and see what you
think."
"Alright. I'll see you on Monday at 6 am."
"Thank you Johnny, I really appreciate it."
"It's my pleasure Lynn. Think nothing of it."
****Meanwhile with the boys*****
"So this kid that's coming in next week. You guys think he'll be any good?" Chris asks.
"Yep. If my vocal coach could remember his name and shit, he's gotta be really good. That man's mind is like a sive. Nothing
stays in there for long." Justin replies.
"So you really think he'll be what we need Justin?" JC questions.
"Yes, Jayce. I'm sure he'll be the perfect addition to our little group."
"Good. Now that that is settled. I'm hungry. We gonna eat anytime soon?" Joey whines.
"Joe, you're always hungry. What is wrong with you?" Chris teases.
"I don't know. What's wrong with you?"
"Wha…? Nothings wrong with me." Chris get up and pounces on Joey. They wrestle around for a bit before Lynn comes in.
"What is going on in here?" Lynn states.
Chris and Joey immediately jump up and sheepishly say, "Sorry."
Lynn looks at them and smiles, "It's alright boys. Relax. I just wanted to let you know that there is gonna be someone here on
Monday morning for you to meet. He wants to talk to you before you have to go see Lou again. If he like what he sees, he's
agreed to be your manager."
"Wow, mom. That's great. How'd you do that?"
"He's an old friend of mine, Justin. He once told me that if I ever needed anything that he'd be there for me. Well, I think you
boys are gonna need him. I don't trust that Perlman fella."
"Oh, mom. He's not that bad."
"Justin, I don't care. If I don't trust someone then I don't trust them. My instincts haven't been wrong yet. This man will help
protect you in a way that you may need it and you're not gonna talk me out of it."
"Fine mom. But do you have to make sure a big deal out of it all? Geez, you're kinda embarrassing me in front of JC."
"Sorry, but this is important. JC can't protect you like you need to be protected yet and I'm not gonna let some …. I'm not
gonna let you get hurt by anyone. You understand son?"
"Yes, mom." Justin puts his head down and sits next to JC on the bed.
"Hey, it's cool man. She's just trying to keep you safe, Just." JC soothes.
"I know but she didn't have to make such a big deal out of it. I know I'm young, I don't need her rubbing it in."
****Monday Morning 6 am****
"Man. Why are we up this early again?" Chris complains.
JC's bouncing around the house, having been up since 4 and drinking six cups of coffee, "Just grab a cup of that coffee, Chris. I
don't know what's in it but it's got me on all cylinders and everybody knows I'm not a morning person."
Ding, Dong
"I got it." JC yells.
"That boy really needs to calm down. This guys gonna think he's on something." Joey jokes.
"No doubt. What the heck is up with him?" Chris asks Justin.
"Don't look at me. He used to get like that on MMC too, right before he'd go on. Don't you remember Joey?"
"Yeah, but I didn't see him that often before a show. I just figured it was cuz he was stressed or something."
JC returns to the kitchen with Johnny trailing behind.
"Johnny, I'm glad you could make it." Lynn states, entering the kitchen.
"I couldn't turn you down and you know it, Lynn."
"Well, it's still nice that you came. Thank you."
"I'm actually glad to do it. So are we all here?"
"Yes, we are." JC states, bouncing back in from the dining room.
"Ok, so who do we have?" Johnny asks.
Lynn looks at the boys, puts a hand on JC's shoulder to get him to stand in one place, "We have, JC (she nods to the boys as
she states there names), Joey, Chris and you already know Justin."
"Well, gentlemen, it's nice to meet you."
"Hello." They all say.
"Well, if you sing together that well, then we've got a good thing going. Mind if I hear a bit?"
"Sure. What you wanna hear?" JC asks.
"What ya got?" The do a rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner. "That was pretty good. A bit unpolished but good. I think
I've just found my next act. Thanks Lynn."
"No thank you Johnny. So you'll go with the boys to this meeting this morning?"
"You got it. As of right now, if they agree, I'm there manager and they don't have any meetings without me present. Is that cool
with you guys?"
"Yes," in unison.
"Great. So what are you meeting with Mr. Perlman about this morning?"
"We're supposed to be meeting the choreographer and vocal people today, I think." JC states.
"Wonderful. Are we ready to go? How are you all going to get there?"
"Well, usually, JC drives mom's van and we all just ride there together." Justin states.
"Ok, do you want me to ride with you or follow you there?"
"Doesn't matter to us. What would you normally do?"
"I'll follow you boys there. That way you can relax the spaz over there a bit before your meeting."
"Yeah. I don't think he'll be calming down anytime soon. He gets like this before every performance. You should of seen him
on MMC, if you think this is bad."
"Ok, well, we got an hour to get there, so we better get going. I'll see you boys there. Do not go into the meeting without me.
Do you understand?"
"Yes, sir. No meeting without the manager." JC states.
****At Perlman's Office****
"Hello, there beautiful." Chris smiles
"Oh, you again." Anya rolls her eyes.
"Yes," Chris enthuses, "You remembered me this time didn't you?"
"Yes, you're very hard to forget. So what can I do for you gentlemen today?"
"We have a meeting with Mr. Perlman this morning." JC says, shoving Chris off to the side. "Will you please stop bothering
her? She's obviously not interested."
"Thank you Mr. Chasez."
"It's JC, and we're waiting for one more person before we go in to see Mr. Perlman."
"Yes, Mr., I'm mean JC. I'll let him know you're here."
"Thank you Anya." JC turns around and says, "See Chris. That's how you talk to a lady. You can't just get up in their face and
expect them to be interested."
"Yeah, yeah. I didn't see her handing you no phone number or anything." Chris grumbles.
"Um, JC?"
"Yes, he's ready when you are. And could you give this to your friend. I do think he's kinda cute. He just has a lousy
approach."
"I'd be happy to, and thank you."
JC hands the paper over to Chris and says, "Maybe you should work on your technique, just a bit."
"Yeah, whatever."
Johnny walks in and JC approaches Anya's desk again, "We're all here now. If you could inform Mr. Perlman."
"Sure, no problem." She picks up the phone, tells him they're all there, hangs up the phone and says, "He's ready for you.
They're in the back conference room where you all were the other day. You can go on back whenever you're ready."
"Thank you."
They all walk down the hall and enter the conference room, "Boys. I'm so glad you could make it this morning. And who's this
with you?" Lou asks suspiciously.
"This," JC says proudly, "is our manager, Johnny Wright."
"Oh," Lou raises an eyebrow. (These boys are pretty smart, damn.) "It's nice to see you again Mr. Wright. It's been awhile."
"Yes, it has. So who do we have from your side?" Johnny asks.
"We have Dave, he'll be their vocal trainer/coach. Tiffany will work on their style and wardrobe. And last but not least we have
Ivan who will be handling their choreography."
Ivan steps forward and circles each one of the boys (Well, this might actually be worth my time).
