Hold On To The Inside - Thirteen

"What do you mean? Why can't I go home?"

"Well," the doctor starts. "You have Hyperemesis gravidarum."

"Oh." JC gasps, "Um...how bad is that?"

"Well, you have one of the most severe cases we've seen in a long time."

"Ok, um... could you get my friend back in here please? JUSTIN!!!!!!!!!!!"

Justin comes running back in, "What? What is it J...Rose?" He grabs JC's hand, "What's the matter sweetie?"

"Maybe you should sit down young man," The doctor states.

"I have....I have Hyper...what the hell's the name of it again doc?"

"Hyperemesis gravidarum." The doctor states.

"Oh, sweetie, that's ok. It could be worse. I thought you were gonna tell me you were dying or something. This can be treated, right doc?"

"Yes. I was about to explain that to Rose when she yelled for you."

"Well...I...um....could you two please explain to me what this thing is?"

Justin smiles at Rose and the doctor states, "It's a severe case of vomitting in pregnant women. You have become dehydrated and are on the verge of malnutrition. When was the last time you can remember eating something and being able to actually keep it in your stomach for more than ten minutes?"

"Um...." JC looks at Justin, "I have no idea. I've been sick for so long and haven't really been able to keep much down."

Justin looks at JC, "Sweetie? I thought it was just in the mornings. I haven't seen you getting sick after lunch and dinner?"

"I have, I've just been able to hide it a bit better. It's usually not as bad after lunch or dinner. Just the mornings are really bad."

"That's because it's mixing with the regular morning sickness and making it that much worse." The doctor states.

"Damn, Rose. You can't hide stuff like that from us. We should have brought you in sooner."

"Actually, we caught it pretty early on so we should be able to treat it, but she's gonna have to stay in the hospital. We have to give the drugs to her through an IV since she can't eat."

"Man, that means more needles, doesn't it?" JC whines.

"I'm afraid so deary." The doctor smiles. "I've heard about you and your aversion to them. If there was anyway we could avoid it, believe me, I would."

"Thanks, that makes me feel so much better." JC states.

The doctor looks JC over for a few minutes and then asks, "It says in your records here that this isn't the first time you've passed out. Care to enlighten me?"

"Well..." JC starts, "It's been happening for as long as I can remember actually. When I was little, don't ask me how young I was, you'd have to ask my mom, it happened three or four times in one week and scared my mom to death so she took me to the doctor. They ran all kinds of tests but couldn't find anything wrong with me. I wasn't malnurished, dehydrated or anything else. There were no physical reasons that they could find to cause it. They did CAT scans to make sure I didn't have anything in my brain. They did X-rays and any other test of any portion of my body that they could think of that would cause me to pass out. All their tests came out negative. Then they did a few blood tests and found out that my blood sugar was extremely low. They made me eat two candy bars, waited ten minutes and tested me again. They told me that my blood sugar levels hadn't even been affected by the two candy bars. They couldn't figure it out." JC stopped and took a deep breath.

"Well, that is a bit interesting. They never diagnosed you with diabetes?" The doctor asks.

"No, they just told me to try to eat as much as possible. I'm usually fine as long as I remember to eat."

"Yeah, more than once a day." Justin states.

JC blushes, "Yeah, I have a bad habit of forgetting to eat. It's a good thing the guys are always around to make sure I eat."

"Well, as long as you are here and we're running tests. I think perhaps we will check up on that little problem of yours too." The doctor states as he walks towards the door.

Justin smiles at JC, "Man, don't you ever scare me like that again Jayce. I thought you were dying or something."

"Well...I wanna know how you knew what that was? It sounded horrible. I thought I was dying, the way he came in here. All he did was tell me I had it and that it was the worst case they'd seen in a long time."

Justin laughs, "Well...I can imagine it probably is. I wonder what that doctor would do if we told him the truth."

"Don't you even think about it Justin. We'll both be in the nuthouse."

"But, we'd be there together." Justin leans in and kisses JC's forehead. "Get some sleep. They're gonna come steal some more blood soon."

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Quit reminding me already, would ya?"

"Sorry."

JC closes his eyes and falls asleep to Justin humming softly next to him.
