JC tried to sleep that night, but sleep wouldn't come. He gave up at about 1am and decided he would try to do something creative. He made his way to the kitchen and spent the next several hours cooking. When Lance came down from his room the next morning he was in for quite the surprise.
"Jayce?"
JC looks up from the open oven he had been checking, "Yeah?"
"How long have you been in here?"
"I don't know what time is it?"
"It's almost eight."
"Well, I got up about one. I just couldn't sleep. I know don't even say it. Anyway. I couldn't sit still to watch TV so I just started baking. You want some? I made plenty."
"Yeah, I can see that. What is all this stuff anyway?"
"Well, lets see. We have your traditional cinnamon rolls, with and without raisins. Banana Bread, Egg Braids, Washington Cherry Cheesecake, Million $ Fudge, Pumpkin Cookies, Zucchini Bread, Cherry Cobbler, Cream Cheese Tortes, Rich Peach Cobbler, Pop Overs [not the traditional ones that go into the oven]. I made these for everybody for breakfast. Boston Creme Pie. Caramel Fudge Cake, Double Chocolate Fudge, and for dinner tonight I made Thirty - Clove Chicken. I have plain old brownies in the oven for mom to take back for Tyler and Heather. You don't think it's too much do you?"
"Damn, Jayce. I wasn't aware that you could cook like this. What is going on with you? Where'd you get all these recipe's from?"
"Well, I found this cookbook in your library. It was quite dusty, I'm assuming by the look on your face that you weren't even aware that you had a cookbook in your house? Anyway. I just flipped through it a decided to start cooking. What do you think?"
"I think I'm getting hungry. What did you say you made us for breakfast?"
"They're called pop-overs."
"I thought you cooked pop-overs in the oven. You've got a pan of oil. Are you sure you made them correctly?"
"This is how the cookbook said to make them. Here give'm a try. [He puts several of them on a plate.] Here you gotta put this stuff on the top. It's supposed to be some kind of sauce."
"Hey, I smell food. Oh, wow. What the hell happened in here and were the little chef fairy go that made all this stuff?" Joey asked as he comes into the kitchen.
"Morning Joey. You hungry? What would you like to have for breakfast?" Lance comments. "One of our lead singers has decided to start moonlighting as a chef."
"C? You made all of this stuff? What, were you up all night or something?" Justin asks as he walks in with Chris on his heels.
"What are you guys all doing up so early? We don't have anything to do today. Johnny and Lou both said that we were off today, can you believe it?" Lance asks.
"What, a guy can't get up early now and then?" Chris says with a smirk.
"Nah, you guys sit down and enjoy. I'm gonna go take a shower." JC says warily.
"Lance? Has he been up all night? He had to be if he cooked all this stuff. Where'd he get all this stuff? He didn't really bake all this himself did he?" Justin asks.
"He found an old cookbook in my library last night and just started baking. I'm still marvelling at the fact that he can cook and look at all this stuff."
"Man, this stuff is great. What you eatin' Lance? That looks good." Joey drools.
"Dude, get your own plate. Jayce put a whole bunch of these things in the microwave to stay warm. You gotta put that stuff in the frying pan over the top. They are delicious. They taste like donuts with a lemony sugar glaze. Justin you gotta try them. None for Chris though. We'll never be able to control him if he eats any of this stuff. Don't touch the stove. He has our dinner cooking in there. Some kind of chicken dish." Lance warns.
"Oh, my goodness. What happened in here? Who did all this?" Karen marveled as her and Roy joined the boys.
"Well, Mrs. C. It seems your son has developed a new love. He was up all night baking for us. Can you believe he made all this?" Joey says as he plops down next to Justin who is busily devouring cinnamon rolls.
"Hey, Just. Don't eat all of them. There is plenty of other stuff you guys have to try." Lance states.
"What is this stuff? It looks like it took forever to get that braid look in there. Check it out." Chris comments looking at the stuff laid out across the table
"I couldn't tell you. He rattled all the stuff off so fast and I was still kinda in a daze as he was talking that I really didn't catch all the names of the stuff he made." Lance answers.
JC comes back in, looks around and says, "Damn, I guess I got a bit carried away didn't I?"
"Yeah, C. That's ok though we don't mind. Most of this stuff should keep for a while. Not like we're going back on the road soon or anything. We may have to let the rest of the guys stay here and help us eat it though. I don't think that just the too of us can eat all this by ourselves. This is really good."
JC smiles at Lance and runs his hand across his back as he walks by. "I think I'm gonna put some of this stuff in the fridge and cover the rest up. Mom, dad, I made some stuff for you to take back with you too. I hope you don't mind?"
"Take home. I think I'm moving in with you? This stuff looks so good son. When did you learn to cook like this?" Roy asked.
"You remember the last break we had? Well I went to a couple of classes and they showed me that I could make anything I wanted I just had to pay attention to it while it was cooking. You all know that my attention span isn't that long unless it has to do with music. Well I have finally developed a love for something other than music and this is it. I now have two great passions in my life."
"Great, so you can come stay with me on next break then," Chris said with enthusiasm.
"Nope, I think I'm gonna take up permanent residence right here. If Lance doesn't mind, that is. He has the perfect oven for baking and after several tries I finally got it figured out. I'm not gonna go through that at your hell-hole of an apartment. Thanks anyway. What time does your flight leave mom?"
"We have to leave in about 20 minutes." Karen answered.
"Well, make sure you give Tyler and Heather my love. Let me know what you find out. I would really like to find them and the sooner I get started the sooner I can get some rest. Thank you for being honest with me about all this."
"We had to tell you son. We didn't want you to find out the hard way. I'd rather you know now than have some stranger tell you. That just wouldn't be fair to you. We love you way too much for that." Karen states.
"I love you too."
"Good, now take that scrawny little ass up to your room and get some rest. The boys can make sure we get to the airport ok. Bye baby." Karen says as she hugs JC goodbye.
"Bye mom, dad. See you soon." JC says. "Guys, could you please make sure they get to the airport ok? Thanks."
"Sure man, I'll take them. I gotta go change and pick up some clothes anyway. I'm not letting any of this stuff go to waste. Ya all just got a new roommate for the rest of the time we're off." Chris says as he heads out to his car.
