Season
2003 will see the introduction of a new competition by the N.S.W.R.L.,
the "Jim Beam Cup", comprising up to 12 competing clubs
including the "Hawks".
This
new concept will replace the former "Metro Cup" and will
consist of only one team per club, thus dispensing with A Reserve
grade competition.
After
much discussion and numerous meetings, the "Hawks" have
agreed to a shared resources venture with the Balmain Tigers R.L.F.C,
which will see Ryde-Eastwood provide sponsorship support for the
Balmain club and play as the Ryde-Eastwood "Hawks" in
the "Jim Beam Cup".
Where
possible the "Hawks" will play on the same day and venue
as Balmain and the Wests Tigers.
|
The
"Hawks" will use Leichhardt Oval for training and home
fixtures and see this move as a way for younger players to have
a career path to Balmain and hopefully into the N.R.L. with the
Wests Tigers.
A further part of the venture will be the Ryde-Eastwood "Kids
for Kangaroos" concept and the Ryde-Eastwood "Twilight
Cup" competition. Both these concepts are formed at the schoolboy
level with opportunities for advancement for promising young players
of the future.
|
|
The
"Hawks" committee sees these moves as positive steps towards
revitalising our code in the Ryde area and is hopeful of success
in the long term.
The
club has appointed Paul Fletcher to coach the "Hawks"
in this new competition and Paul together with the Balmain and our
coaching staff has commenced training at Balmains facility
at Concord Oval.
