Do you want to make a webpage to put your genealogy on? Then you've come to the right place. Below is a few suggestions that we have compiled for your assistance.

First off, you need to know HTML. If you do not know HTML, don't worry! Web Tech University is here to teach you HTML. This is a wonderful online service that you will greatly benefit from. The classes are free and a variety are offered.

The second thing that you need to do is to have a website to put it on. Below is a list of only a few:
Angelcities
Bravenet
Crosswinds
GeoCities
MSN Groups
Rootsweb
Tribal Pages for Genealogy websites
Tripod

These are only a few suggestions. There are many out there, these are just the more well known.

Once you have chosen a server, you need to decide what content you would like to put up. Most people begin with their surnames and build from there. One thing that you should remember is to make sure that you don't infringe upon someone else's copyrights. Always give credit to those who deserve it.

You probably have an idea of what you want to put up on your site. While you are in the process of putting your site up, make sure that you are organizing it in a logical way. There are two ways in which you can organize your website.
  • Sequential: in this way, you will organize your site pretty much the same way that you would read a book. In other words, on each of the pages, you would want to link to the page before and after the one that you are currently on.
  • Heirarchal: in this way, you would organize your site, with one main page to refer to. Many people have a sitemap for their visitors to keep referring to. This seems to be the preferred way for genealogists, because genealogy sites can become quite large.
If you are still not sure on a way to set up your site, then go and visit other genealogy websites and see how they are set up. By getting an idea of how others did theirs, you will come up with a way that you want to do yours.

Once you get your site set up and running, the next step is to promote it. One way that you can do this is to submit your site to all the search engines. By doing this, you will be listed when someone searches for genealogy sites. Another good way to promote your site is to add your link in your signature that you use when you email your friends. However you chose to promote your site, just remember to get your name out there!

The best advice that I can give you is to have fun! If you are not enjoying it, then by all means don't do it! For a more in debt article on how to construct a genealogy webpage, click here.
