Episode 1 - John Raymond
At the start of the show we learn what is meant by the twist Burnell has promised the viewers. After gathering the survivors together Probst annouces that the oldest man and woman would take turns divvying up the castaways into two tribes with an equal number of men and women on both. The only thing unusual that happens, Jake Billingsley, captain of the Sook Jai Tribe, picks the younger stronger men and women whereas Jan Gentry, captain of the Chuay Gahn Tribe, chooses the older hopefully wiser people. After the tribes have been determined, they break for separate camps.

The viewers were also told to expect a high degree of infighting amongst the castaways themselves this time around. It didn't take long to start. The part relevant to episode 1 is the fact that Pastor John never went out to assisted fellow tribe members who had to swim back to the island. Then after they arrived he played a practical joke by initially lying to them about the source of the water supply. Needless to say, this was a stupid move on his part.

The immunity challenge was a boat race to collect flags at obstacle stations. Ghandia Johnson was choosen to solve a puzzle station in order to bring back a flag to the boat. The Chuay Gahn Tribe had the lead at that point but, she got hung up on solving her maze shifting puzzle and the early time differnetial was lost. She became the natural eviction choice except on a split decision they decided to punish the Padre for pulling that stunt with the watering hole. This can't be a good decision. The screwup on the first immunity challenge should always be the first to go!
  • Reward Challenge: N/A WINNER:
  • Immunity Challenge: The tribes squared off in a boat race with stops to perform activities in order to gather flags. WINNER: Sook Jai Tribe
Episode 2 - Tanya Vance
Each tribe has members who are engaged in the activity of primary importance to the tribe. Others ters are passing on that and identifying another task they feel is more urgent. Finally, no different from previous Survivors, some people are sick.

Now both tribes give an excellent accounting of themselves in both the reward and immunity challenges but, both times Chuay Gahn comes up just a bit short. Prominently, displayed is the poor performance of Jan Gentry who doesn't row nor swim very well. Factors that have spelled doom for others during the team competitions.

At tribal council, in another split vote, they send Tanya packing. I see nothing wrong with this since it has gone this way before. Still the tribe is retaining members like Ghandia Johnson and Jan Gentry who have proven to be neither smart nor brawny.
  • Reward Challenge: One member of each tribe is carried by his blindfolded mates around a figure eight obstacle course. WINNER: Sook Jai Tribe wins an additional lantern and fishing gear.
  • Immunity Challenge: The tribes squared off in a boat race with stops to perform activities in order to gather flags. WINNER: Sook Jai Tribe.
Episode 3 - Jed Hildlbrand
The outcomes and well as fortunes of the two tribes shifted as Chuay Gahn took both ends of the competitions. Rather interesting how Sook Jai made the dumbest mistakes during the reward challenge. They blew what should've been an easy victory. Prior to the immunity contest, Erin Collins and several others seemed to be in a frame of mind to flub the contest in order to pare dead weight at this point. I don't believe anyone is trying to take the leadship role at Sook Jai.

Anyway Jed Hildlbrand loses his tribes fishing net! This plus his overall laziness makes him the majority winner at Sook Jai's tribal council over Shii Ann Huang. It would appear that her teamates have marked her for ejection next.
  • Reward Challenge: An interesting cargo transfer competition from boat to boat along a bamboo foot path. The bamboo poles had a single section where the tribe members would cross going in opposite directions at the same time. In this section they could engage the opposition and try to throw the other team into the water. WINNER: Chuay Gahn Tribe wins the counsel of two Tawianese Red Berets for a day! They help teach them what can be eaten.
  • Immunity Challenge: The tribes compete in the famous "Tower of Hanoi" puzzle to see who can solve it the fastest by moving pagoda pieces around. WINNER: Chuay Gahn Tribe.
Episode 4 - Ghandia Johnson
Even though the Chuay Gahn tribe lost another member on this particular show the viewers were able to see how disorganized the Sook Jai tribe appears to be. It seems every member is pulling in some different direction. This episode highlighted how Stephanie Dill is doing her own thing. She mourned the lost of Jed at tribal council and assumed his role of attempting to secure seafood. She also decorated the dummy used in the reward challenge entirely by herself.

I can't imagine that this will do them any good as a unit after the merger. Presently, it appears that only Ken Stafford and Robb Zbacnik have considered acting in concert. Whereas in addition to the aforementioned Stephanie, Shii Ann Huang is also operating independently.

Meanwhile over at Chuay Gahn's camp, Ghandia and Ted's arguement over sexual contact continues. The men and the women align opposite each other and it would appear that we're headed for a tie vote. The women also seem to have realized that Clay Jordan has a prior vote whereas the men are all set to remove Ghandia at this point.

In the last few hours before the vote, Helen Glover decides the foresake the other two ladies and remove Ghandia now. Strategically, she believes that this will leave the tribe better equipped for the final two immunity challenges. Long overdue if you ask me.
  • Reward Challenge: Both tribes first decorated, then carried around the island 250lbs. tackling dummies. WINNER: Sook Jai Tribe wins a rack of bananas and several chickens.
  • Immunity Challenge: The tribes race against each other with separate but identical puzzle pieces to rearraign them into two different shapes. WINNER: Sook Jai Tribe.
Episode 5 - Stephanie Dill
This was prehaps one of the most boring shows of any Survivor that this author has ever witnessed. Prior to the show those analyzing it were teased with the prospect of another tribal swap. Well none took place. Jeff offered but, if someone wanted to shift they needed a corresponding party from the other tribe to accept a swap. There were NO takers. A new low on the boredom meter Burnett!

I'm still mystified by Sook Jai's lack of team co-ordination and planning. People continue to move in different directions, no alliances (could be the editting) are being pursued and the tribe can't seem to agree on who to boot. Now I know Stephanie Dill was sick in the early going. However, she's better now and like Jed who was voted off before her, she was concerned with the food supply! Shii Ann was the obvious choice to go as she's more of a consumer then a producer of anything at this point. Well only one more person ejected before the merge, perhaps it will not matter.

Note: Why is Erin Collins always choosen to sit out challenges if there is a numerical inequity in the number of people? I want to see those "puppies" in action baby!
  • Reward Challenge: The traditional Food Auction. Ho-Hum. It did seem as if Chuay Gahn got the better of it. WINNER: N/A
  • Immunity Challenge: In probably one of the simplest challenges ever, the tribes sort the catch of a fishing boat into buckets. Interesting because it gives any combo of men vs. women a fighting chance to win it. This is exactly what happens. WINNER: Chuay Gahn Tribe.
Episode 6 - Robb Zbacnik
"He made me ... make sense to myself". That was Robb speaking to Ken Stafford on their solo spelunking trek. He certainly didn't make any sense to me but he succeeded in giving his tribemates the "whillies". He appeared to be ok until he started to get paranoid about the results of the last Sook Jai tribal council vote.

Nevertheless this was a smart move. As we move on to individual immunity it makes perfect sense to get rid of the physically stronger players as soon as possible. Still the lack of cohesiveness is not offering too much hope for the future of Sook Jai. Although Chuay Gahn has three current members with prior votes, Shii Ann has a whopping six prior votes. If Chuay Gahn bonds together and blocks votes for her, then even a tie can guarantee the elimination of Sook Jai over time.
  • Reward Challenge: Both tribes played a Lacrosse type of game with catching balls launched by a slingshot. WINNER: Sook Jai Tribe wins a Thaiwanese feast and entertainment.
  • Immunity Challenge: The tribes compete in another puzzle game usually called the "Matchsticks" puzzle to see who can capture the last flag. WINNER: Chuay Gahn Tribe.
Episode 7 - Shii Ann Huang
This turned out to be an interesting episode as far as Survivors are concerned. Probst made the castaways think that the two tribes were merging. This being the case, a couple of the people decided to shift their individual strategies differently.

Shii Ann immediately went over to members of Chuay Gahn and announced her intentions to block vote with them. At the same time she suggested Penny Ramsey as the person to boot since she felt that Penny was manipulative. Perhaps her biggested mistake was mentioning her reasoning to Ken Stafford the NYC cop, who must have conveyed this information to the rest of the Sook Jai Tribe.

To make a long story short, the tribes remain as separate entities, Sook Jai loses the "Tribal" immunity contest, Shii Ann appeals to reason at tribal council and then is promptly booted for being the traitor that she actually is. The audience as well as the tribe members on the show, are left to speculate on when if at all a merger will that place.
  • Reward Challenge: There was no reward challenge. The people of both tribes were given fresh fruit, crackers and cheese as well as bottles of wine to drink. Several most notably Brian Heidik got drunk and made asses of themselves.
  • Immunity Challenge: They locked both tribe members in irons and then cages. Just out of reach are keys to the shackles. WINNER: Chuay Gahn Tribe ties together the loose sticks and is able to retrieve the key rings first.
Episode 8 - Erin Collins
Another three days pass and still no merger. Also the people went without a reward challenge again. I think this actually detracts from an important element of the the show. The winners of reward challenges were occasionally given something of value that might be worth bartering or sharing for another persons vote.

Instead, the telecast was "loaded" at the back end with emotional slobbering amongst the remaining members of the Sook Jai Tribe as they huddled together after losing the immunity challenge. We learned as viewers that the four remaining people Erin, Jake, Ken and Penny had decided to work together to last together until the final four. At tribal council both men declared that they were necessary future elements of the tribe as long as the tribes continue to compete. This meant that the whichever women was deemed a threat, wasn't regarded as valuable in immunity contests or didn't schmooze the men the right way was toast. Erin was actively working to win the game and never worked her feminine wiles on anyone. She became the well reasoned choice. Say goodbye to the hooters fellas.
  • Reward Challenge: There was no reward challenge.
  • Immunity Challenge: Again they had a tribe vs. tribe competition involving breathing underwater thru tubes made of bambboo. The tubes were mounted in a fixed position and partially submerged so as they began the contest they were half filled with water. WINNER: Chuay Gahn Tribe.
Episode 9 - Ken Stafford
So they finally merged! It's too late CBS. There are five people on the Chuay Gahn Tribe versus three people on the Sook Jai Tribe. Now keep in mind this version of Survivor didn't feature any tribal member swapping which drastically altered the mid-game strategy on Survivor 4 Marquesas. As expected, the natural choice to vote off the island is the strongest member of the weakest tribe namely, Ken Stafford of the Sook Jai Tribe.

CBS is doing it's best to make this the most boring Survivor ever. No member swapping and then compounding the problem by delaying the merger? The only hope at this point rests with Jake Billingsley and Penny Ramsey of Sook Jai. Can they persuade some people from Chuay Gahn to vote with them. It's doubtful at this point.

Frankly, they may as well pick them off one at a time and then the five remaining from Chewy tribe go at it near the end. If you think about it, you'll see it makes good sense for Clay Jordan and the gals who will now have a serious chance to win!
  • Reward Challenge: The eight remaining survivors had a 3-round elimination tournament starting with preselected pairs of people squaring off on an obstacle course. The final saw Brian Heidik besting Helen Glover in a puzzle assembly competition. WINNER: Brian Heidik.
  • Immunity Challenge: A 2-part individual competition involving memorizing then later utilizing Thai symbols for numerical digits 1-9 to navigate a maze of buried tiles. WINNER: Clay Jordan.
Episode 10 - Penny Ramsey
I have to give Penny and Jake of the former Sook Jai Tribe a lot of credit. Neither rolled over to die and both attempted to sway the votes of others. Still the Chuay Gahn Tribe has not turned against one another. Only Clay voted for Jake as opposed to Penny.

Let's loosely assume that Clay sides with Brian and Ted at this point. Then Jake has to gang up with the gals to keep it three vs three but, with both Ted and Clay in a tie for previous number of votes. So with you are tracking with me, it's up to Clay to secretly side with the women at this point. That alliance makes like nothing has changed with Chuay Gahn and they vote off Jake next tribal council. Then Brian and Ted will be picked off on subsequent weeks!

I think Clay is the linchpin to determining the final three. So far there has been no indication that he will take any action.
  • Reward Challenge: The survivors negotiated a set of obstacles in a pair down competition that unfortunately featured two decision points where they had an ODD-man out (whoever couldn't find a partner was eliminated). Again the final saw Brian Heidik out running Clay Jordan on the final bamboo section but, choosing him nevertheless to accompany him on an elephant ride on the mainland. WINNER: Brian Heidik.
  • Immunity Challenge: The producers used the old quiz on locale and culture to decide the immunity winner. Always a safe bet as it gives the women a fair chance to win. WINNER: Helen Glover.
Episode 11 - Jake Billingsley
I never thought much of the week off summary shows but now CBS has sunk to a new low. Making loved ones eat vile vermin for the opportunity to spend 24 hrs with their loved ones, is disgraceful. All of them should've balked when the details were presented to them. I give Brian Heidik's wife credit for opting out after the first round.

The only new item given to the viewers during the entire show was Helen Glover's distrust of Clay Jordan. Doesn't she realize that if Jan and her can team with Clay they can easily bump off Brian and Ted? In any case it would seem Clay is the next to go but, perhaps the gals had better revisit their thoughts on this. Otherwise both of the gals go next should the men decide to make this a best man wins competition.
  • Reward Challenge: They made the relatives (mostly spouses) of the survivors compete in an "Eat-Off" contest in order to determine who get's to spend the next 24 hrs with their loved ones as an honorary member of Chuay Jai.
    WINNER: Helen Glover's husband.
  • Immunity Challenge: Each survivor and his or her's relative brought over for the Reward Challenge were tied together at the wrists in this puzzle assembly challenge. Initially each colored cubes' parts were lumped together in a central pile. Every team of two picked a color and began to piece together their respective cube.
WINNER: Ted Rodgers, Jr. and brother.
Episode 12 - Ted Rodgers, Jr.
Slowly we're finding out that all members of the Chuay Gahn Tribe are drunks. This episode also confirmed that Ted will pledge his love to any readily available female. He didn't realize that Helen is a player however.

Basically, they held to the time honored tradition of voting off the strongest player that round. Perhaps the only thing this episode showed is that no allegiance is safe. Brian abandoned his with Ted like yesterday's trash. Ted did try to cement prior overtures to Helen and picked her to share his reward challenge. She broke with him when it was apparent that she couldn't get Jan to commit to ejecting Clay during tribal council.

Just a few thoughts on Brian at this point. He has been playing every single person in the game to different degrees. Trouble is he never qualified any of them as partial in the eyes of the other party. This normally doesn't bode well should you become one of the final two. There is only one way around it and even that's not fool proof.

Take a fall guy with you at the end. I suspect Brian figures that he can't win the final vote versus the remaining women so, the next best thing to do is bring along a despised man! I can't imagine any reason why he's let Clay hang around this long except as a foil.

As for the women, they're going along with the flow happy to let the men do each other in. So they have no choice but to side with the strongest male's vote until now. On day 37, that will change when we find out if Brian is willing to keep Helen in the game for the final pole standing "endurance" contest amongst the final three.
  • Reward Challenge: The person to gather and make a 2-word phrase out of the individual letter pieces of an anagram wins a Chevy SUV, Thai feast, shower and massage. Actually Brian deciphered the puzzle first but the moron spelled the solution incorrectly as "raod trip". I'll bet he can spell "as is" since he is a used car salesman. Anyway, Ted overheard the answer and presented it correctly while Brian went into vapor lock trying to figure out what he did wrong. Ted was allowed to take another person with him and he brought Helen to share the pampering while at the same time soliciting her vote against Clay.
    WINNER: Ted Rodgers, Jr..
  • Immunity Challenge: Pick up and put in place the steps of a staircase. First person to position the pieces on their proper steps wins!
    WINNER: Brian Heidik.
Episode 13 - Day 37: Helen Glover  Day 38: Jan Gentry  Day 39: Clay Jordan
Brian Heidik
Brian Heidik
Survivor Thailand Winner

Ah the best final Tribal Council vote of them all! Finally, the jury was emotionally charged and put the final two on the spot with serious questions that involved how they were personally treated by the two finalists.

Now I didn't think Brian deserved to win this. He made alliances with more than one person at a time although only the one with Clay counted. Actually, this is a tried and true strategy from all walks of life. Carry a loser with you all the way to the finals so that even the vanquished have no choice but to select you over the fall guy. It's a shame that it succeeded at the end. Would've been Tony Award winning drama had the jury sided with Clay.
  • Immunity Challenge(1): A hodgepodge of prior obstacle courses, puzzles and yes the eat something gross that they put the survivor's mate's through. The gals were stymied early on but it was the same puzzle from the initial team immunity competition that hung up Ghandia that stopped Clay from winning this.
WINNER: Brian Heidik who didn't hesitate to stab Helen Glover in the back this round.
  • Immunity Challenge(2): Another endurance contest where the remaining three stood in some sort of Budda like stance holding coins between their fingers until they couldn't maintain the position and dropped the coins.
WINNER: Brian Heidik lasted approximately 15 mins and voted off Jan Gentry leaving him competing with Clay Jordan for the winner's share.
  • Final Vote Result: Helen Glover, Jan Gentry, Ted Rodgers, Jr. and Jake Billingsley voted for Brian versus Erin Collins, Ken Stafford and Penny Ramsey voting for Clay.
