Yahoo! Messenger is the primary instant messenging program for users. It provides instant communication, file sharing, chat and miscellaneous services in an online service accessed from a program downloaded to your computer.
Below are KEY links relating to messenger services as well as the folders and files where items are located.
It is possible to add user supplied sound files to Yahoo! Messenger Chat. Only .wav files are playable and you must have Microsoft's Media Player downloaded and specified as your default program used to open (therefore "play") these files.
Now you can supply your own sound files but, in my Std_Profile's Briefcase there exists a "Sounds" folder (open the briefcase then click on the "Sounds" folder) of .wav files that fellow Yahoo chatters have standardized on. Remember, if other people besides yourself are to hear the sounds they must have the similarly named files installed on their system. The next step is where to place the files on your computer.
The .wav files listed above must be downloaded into this folder: Yahoo! Messenger Media Folder (click on to open) on your hard drive. The direct method is to right click on the name of a file in Internet Explorer and then select the "Save Target as" option to bring up the download dialog box. At the top of the box you selectively step through folders in order to get to the
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media
folder. Basically, select My Computer ... then C: ... then Program Files ... etc. until you arrive at the the final "Media" folder where you will notice the collection of already installed Wave Sound files. Once there click "Save" and finally "Close" if your computer prompts you at the conclusion of a download.
OK, now to "trigger" a sound file so that it plays in the chat room you type the following type of triggering tag into the chat room:
<snd=sound-name >
wheresound-name is the name of a sound file in the Yahoo! Messenger Media Folder without the .wav extentsion.
