TRAVELLERS ROUND TABLE !

AUTOS AND TAXIS  !

1SHOULD ONE TRAVEL LOW COST FROM AIRPORTS ? IF SO, HOW?

I often just wait til day light and then ask to be dropped in the hotel area.then you can check things out for yourself.

Of course, some may want to go directly at night if you are sure of your hotel and fare. The extra Rs 100 or so is not worth the hassle of staying up all night.

i would suggest preparing your self with a mental map of the area you wish to go to and having a hotel name chosen.

if the hotel is full ask them do you know anywhere else i might try.they often do..sometimes i just photocopy the page of the guide book i'll need to get to the hotel.

delhi is easy to reach by bus.

in chennai if you go out of the airport and cross the road you'll see a train station.it's 5rps to egmore where you will find hotels. ( difficult with too much luggage - half a km walk; backpack alone is fine)

in bombay you can catch a bus to andheri station and then take a train to central bombay.(it will cost you around 10rps)although it may be a bit daunting for your first time.If in doubt take a pre paid taxi to where you want to go.never go with a guy in the airport whoes friend has a taxi!!!

1. my thoughts...

When you get to the airport you are probably going to have a thousand porters falling over themselves and each other to try and fight for your business.

They may only get one job in a night and it could be you! So let them carry your bags and pay them 50 - 100 rupees (I think) and that will feed their family for a meal!

We had rickshaw drivers trying to charge us twice (pre-paid and then again when we got to our destination) and taxi drivers telling us that the hotel we wanted to go to had burnt down or full and that he would take us to a better one - trying to get commission from the hotel. Don't believe this story... just insist that he takes you to your hotel of choice!

All of this sort of stuff is harmless but annoying.

ABOUT A BUS FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE CITY - THIS GOT A LITTLE TRICKY HERE! PASSIONS AROUSED AND SOME FIERY ANSWERS!

EATS Bus - (11 replies)

When I flew into Delhi three years ago, I caught the EATS (Ex Servicemens) bus from the airport to Connaught Place, around Rs50. From CP I got a rickshaw to Pahar Ganj.
Now all I see here is the Prepaid Taxi at Rs300 as a suggestion to escape the airport touts.

Is the EATS bus still running?

Thanks,
Colin (arriving 6:00pm Tuesday 12th Nov)

well it sould be about 150rups

funny you travel for 10 hrs+ on the plane, you've spent somemuch on the fare, you given up alot for your dream.
I always laugh when seem some sad looking travelers catch the sad-bus at the airport to save $2.00!!

POINT TAKEN - BUT WHAT IF DOLLARS TWO MATTER - WEBYATRA

 Whats your problem?

I asked a simple question, its not the Rs50 its avoiding the hassle of fighting off the taxi touts, the pretend Tourist Offices why try to scam you to their expensive hotel and I like the idea of Ex Servicemen making a buck by providing a safe efficient service. And the bus isn't sad, its just a bus....

 Yes!!

Yes It's still running, you can pick it up just outside arrivals past the fancy ? new arrivals lounge!!

Happy Travelling!!

 your a bunch of morons!

a cheap too!

Do you realize that the ride is 30 min-45 min by taxi!!

The bus ride may take over 1 hr, and be very uncomfortable.

Personal i would like to relax asap.

mr everything (or is that know all) ?

Someone has asked for information on whether a specific bus is operating.

There's no need to question his rationale for taking this specific mode of transport.

Perhaps he is trying to conserve his money and doesn't have the rp300+ to pay for a single taxi. Whatever the reason, it's his choice.

Who are you, to proliferate your (dare I say 'useless') comments here ?

You have no idea of how long the bus ride takes (as you have indicated above), and the difference between rp50 for the bus & rp300 for a taxi is rp250 = US$5.00 not US$2.00

58 posts in the last week and not one bit of quality. You are one sad individual.

Z.

There is enough in the world to satisfy everyones need, but not everyones greed.
8. Thanks Z

You have said everything I wanted to say to MrThingy, I do have the Rs300 but as I said, I would like to support the Ex Servicemen and the last time I took this bus it was as fast as a taxi, comfortable and not crowded. I didn't have an extra unwanted passenger and I didn't have to argue with the driver about where I wanted to go or how much I should pay. The auto to Pahar Ganj was Rs5 and he delivered me right to the front door of my hotel without any arguement.

I also agree that MrWhatHisName is a PITA, probably writes Java too!

9. colin , zoltan

well said - 250 rupees is one extra day in india - five books or a train ticket from mumbai to hyderabad and...

http://www.oocities.org/webyatra - have a look and give me feedback. thanks
10. . Yes

still runs 70 Rps last stop kashmir gate

11. it's 150 rupes twits! prepaid

belive me i know the different the time on taxi and bus in India. This is stupid advice, when get to the airport take taxi! don't take a bus. the buses are shit in India.

Colin and zolta are wanders.

I've taken the delhi - paharhanj route many, many times. and it is plenty long why chaps. It's also not a direct route, that buses travel.

So wot you say Jamie - take a bus and help the ex-servicemen or help the taxi driver or enjoy the bus or....

- don't just sit there Jamie, decide and go !
